Mark 13

Destruction of the Temple Predicted

1As He was going out of the temple complex, one of His disciples said to Him, “Teacher, look! What massive stones! What impressive buildings! ”[#Mt 24:1-51; Lk 21:5-38; #Ac 21:26; #Mk 4:38; #1Co 14:3]

2Jesus said to him, “Do you see these great buildings? Not one stone will be left here on another that will not be thrown down! ”[#Mk 14:58]

Signs of the End of the Age

3While He was sitting on the Mount of Olives across from the temple complex, Peter, James, John, and Andrew asked Him privately,[#Mt 21:1; #Ac 21:26; #Lk 6:14; Ac 10:32; #Ac 12:2; #Jn 21:7; #Jn 6:8]

4“Tell us, when will these things happen? And what will be the sign when all these things are about to take place? ”

5Then Jesus began by telling them: “Watch out that no one deceives you.

6Many will come in My name, saying, ‘I am He,’ and they will deceive many.[#Jn 10:25; 14:13; #Ex 3:14; Ps 45:8; Jn 8:24; #1Jn 4:6]

7When you hear of wars and rumors of wars, don’t be alarmed; these things must take place, but the end is not yet.[#Jr 51:46; Dn 11:44; #2Th 2:2; #Dn 2:28-29]

8For nation will rise up against nation, and kingdom against kingdom. There will be earthquakes in various places, and famines. These are the beginning of birth pains.[#Is 19:2; #Other mss add and disturbances; #Ac 26:4; #Gl 4:19]

Persecutions Predicted

9“But you, be on your guard! They will hand you over to sanhedrins, and you will be flogged in the synagogues. You will stand before governors and kings because of Me, as a witness to them.[#Local Jewish courts or local councils; #Mt 10:17; #Lk 22:63; Ac 5:40; 16:19-23,37; #Jms 2:2; #Ac 24:10-27; 25:1-12,23-27; #Rm 8:36; #Mk 6:11; 1Tm 2:6; #Php 1:12]

10And the good news must first be proclaimed to all nations.[#Or the gospel; #Mk 1:1; Php 1:5]

11So when they arrest you and hand you over, don’t worry beforehand what you will say. On the contrary, whatever is given to you in that hour — say it. For it isn’t you speaking, but the Holy Spirit.

12Then brother will betray brother to death, and a father his child. Children will rise up against parents and put them to death.[#Jn 13:21; #Is 19:2; Mc 7:6]

13And you will be hated by everyone because of My name. But the one who endures to the end will be delivered.[#Mt 10:22; Lk 6:22; Jn 15:18-21; #Or saved; #1Co 4:12; 2Th 1:4; 2Tm 2:12; Jms 1:12]

The Great Tribulation

14“When you see the abomination that causes desolation standing where it should not” (let the reader understand ), “then those in Judea must flee to the mountains![#Dn 9:27; 11:31; 12:11; #Dn 9:27; #These are, most likely, Mark’s words to his readers.; #Lk 1:5]

15A man on the housetop must not come down or go in to get anything out of his house.[#Lk 17:22-36]

16And a man in the field must not go back to get his clothes.[#Lk 19:36]

17Woe to pregnant women and nursing mothers in those days![#Rv 9:12]

18Pray it won’t happen in winter.[#Mt 5:44; Ac 12:12; #Other mss read pray that your escape]

19For those will be days of tribulation, the kind that hasn’t been from the beginning of the world, which God created, until now and never will be again![#1Co 1:4; #Ac 26:4; #Lit creation; #Jn 1:3; Rv 3:14]

20Unless the Lord limited those days, no one would survive. But He limited those days because of the elect, whom He chose.[#Col 4:1; Jd 5; #Is 60:21-22; #Lit days, all flesh would not survive; #Mt 24:22; #Eph 1:4]

21“Then if anyone tells you, ‘Look, here is the Messiah! Look — there! ’ do not believe it![#Mt 1:17; Eph 5:2]

22For false messiahs and false prophets will rise up and will perform signs and wonders to lead astray, if possible, the elect.[#Or false christs; #Ex 7:3; Dn 6:27; Jn 4:48; Ac 4:30; Rm 15:19; 2Th 2:9; Heb 2:4]

23And you must watch! I have told you everything in advance.

The Coming of the Son of Man

24“But in those days, after that tribulation:[#2Co 1:4]

The sun will be darkened,

and the moon will not shed its light;

25the stars will be falling from the sky,[#Rv 1:16]

and the celestial powers will be shaken.

26Then they will see the Son of Man coming in clouds with great power and glory.[#Mk 2:10; #Mk 8:38; 1Th 4:16; #Dn 7:13-14; #Lk 6:19; #Mk 10:37; Lk 9:32]

27He will send out the angels and gather His elect from the four winds, from the end of the earth to the end of the sky.[#Mt 13:49; Ac 5:19; Rv 14:6; #Mt 22:14,22; #Zch 2:6]

The Parable of the Fig Tree

28“Learn this parable from the fig tree: As soon as its branch becomes tender and sprouts leaves, you know that summer is near.[#Jn 7:15; #Mk 12:1; #Jn 1:48; #Rv 1:1]

29In the same way, when you see these things happening, know that He is near — at the door![#Or you know; #Or it ; = summer]

30I assure you: This generation will certainly not pass away until all these things take place.[#Ps 72:19; Rv 22:21]

31Heaven and earth will pass away, but My words will never pass away.[#Lk 10:21; #2Pt 3:10; #Ps 102:25-27; Is 40:6-8; 51:6; Mt 5:18; Lk 16:17]

No One Knows the Day or Hour

32“Now concerning that day or hour no one knows — neither the angels in heaven nor the Son — except the Father.[#Mt 25:13; #Mt 13:49; #Jn 5:19; Heb 1:2; #Mt 5:16; 11:27; Jn 8:42]

33Watch! Be alert! For you don’t know when the time is coming.[#Other mss add and pray; #Lk 20:20; #Ac 1:7; 1Th 5:1-2; 1Pt 5:6]

34It is like a man on a journey, who left his house, gave authority to his slaves, gave each one his work, and commanded the doorkeeper to be alert.[#Lk 12:35-40; #Mt 10:24]

35Therefore be alert, since you don’t know when the master of the house is coming — whether in the evening or at midnight or at the crowing of the rooster or early in the morning.[#Rv 16:15; #Col 3:22]

36Otherwise, he might come suddenly and find you sleeping.[#Pr 6:4]

37And what I say to you, I say to everyone: Be alert! ”
