Tobit had calculated the number of days it would take Tobiah to reach Rages and return again. He counted the days, and when his son did not return,
he said, “What can be detaining him? Do you think Gabael has died and there is no one to give Tobiah the money?”
Tobit began to worry.
His wife, Anna, said, “My child has died and is no longer alive.” She began to weep and mourn for her son:
“How terrible! Oh, my son, you are the light of my eyes. Why did I let you take that journey?”
But Tobit said to her, “Be quiet and stop worrying, my dear wife. Our son is safe. Probably something unexpected has happened. The man we sent with him is a trustworthy relative. Don’t grieve for Tobiah. He will be here soon.”[#10:6 Greek sister; also in 10:13.]
She answered him, “You be quiet! Stop trying to deceive me. My child has died.” Every day she would rush out and look down the road Tobiah had taken. No one could persuade her to do otherwise. When the sun set, she would go inside to mourn and weep all night long, never getting any sleep.
When the fourteen days of wedding festivities (which Raguel had sworn to give his daughter) had ended, Tobiah said to Raguel, “Send me back. I know my father and mother think they will never see me again. I beg you, father, let me return to my own father, for you know that he is old and blind.”
But Raguel said, “Don’t go; stay with me, my son. I will send messengers to your father to tell him about you.”
But Tobiah responded, “No! I beg you to send me back to my father!”
So Raguel let Tobiah leave with his wife, Sarah. He also gave Tobiah half of all his property: his male and female servants, cattle and sheep, donkeys and camels, clothing, money, and utensils.
As he sent them off, he embraced Tobiah and said to him, “Farewell, my son. Travel safely. May the Lord of heaven give you and your wife many good things. May my eyes see my grandchildren before I die.”
Then he kissed his daughter, Sarah, and said to her, “My daughter, honor your father-in-law and mother-in-law because now they are your parents, just as we are. Go in peace, Daughter. As long as I live, may I hear that you are doing well.” And then he let them go.
Then Edna said to Tobiah, “My child and my beloved brother, may the Lord of heaven bring you home safely. And may I live long enough to see my grandchildren. In the sight of the Lord, I entrust my daughter, Sarah, to you. Don’t ever do anything to make her sad. Go in peace, my son. From now on I am your mother and Sarah is your beloved wife. May we all have prosperous lives.” Then she tenderly kissed them both and sent them on their way.
And Tobiah left Raguel with great joy, praising the Lord of heaven and earth, the King of all, because he had given him a successful journey. Before leaving, he told Raguel and Edna, “May I fulfill the Lord’s command to honor you all the days of my life.”
