Tobit died in peace at the age of 112 years and was buried with honor in Nineveh. He was 62 years old when he went blind. After he was healed, he lived in prosperity, giving money to the poor, continually praising God and acknowledging his majesty.[#14:2 Some manuscripts read 58 years.]
When Tobit was on his deathbed, he sent for his son, Tobiah, and gave him this command: “My son, take your children,
and go to Media. For I believe the message that God has spoken by Nahum concerning Nineveh’s destruction. All the things Nahum said will come upon Assyria and Nineveh. Everything that was spoken by the prophets God sent to Israel will happen. None of their words will fail; all will come true at the right time. So it will be safer in Media than in Assyria and Babylon, for I know and believe that whatever God has said will happen. Not a single word of the prophets’ messages will fail. All of our fellow Israelites will be scattered from the good land, Israel, and taken into captivity. The whole land of Israel will become desolate, including Samaria and Jerusalem. And the Temple of God will be burned to the ground for a while.[#14:4 Greek brothers.]
“But God will again have mercy on them and will bring his people back to the land of Israel. They will rebuild the Temple of God, though it won’t be like the first one. This will be the situation until the time comes for God’s promise to be fulfilled. Then the people of Israel will return from captivity to Jerusalem and rebuild it with splendor. And the Temple of God will be built in it, even as the prophets of Israel said.
Then all the nations of the earth will turn from their ways and will truly worship God. All of them will abandon their idols, which led them into error,
and they will praise the eternal God in righteousness. All the Israelites who are rescued in those days and who truly acknowledge God will go to Jerusalem. They will live safely forever in the land of Abraham, which will be handed over to them. Those who truly love God will rejoice, and those who practice sin and injustice will disappear from the earth.
-9“And now, my children, I give you these commands: Serve God sincerely, and do what is pleasing to him. Command your children to do what is right and to give charitably. They must remember God, blessing his name at all times in truth and with all their strength. Now, my son, leave Nineveh; do not stay here.
As soon as your mother dies and you have buried her beside me in the tomb, leave this city without delay. For I see that there is great injustice here; this city is full of treacherous and shameless people.
“My son, look at what Nadab did to Ahikar, who had raised him. Wasn’t Ahikar forced to hide underground? But God personally repaid Nadab for his shameful treatment of Ahikar. Ahikar eventually returned to the light of day, but Nadab has gone into eternal darkness for trying to kill Ahikar. Because of his charitable acts, Ahikar escaped the deathly trap Nadab set for him. But Nadab fell into it himself—to his own destruction.
So now, my children, see what happens to those who are charitable. And see what happens to those who are unjust—they die!
“But now it is getting hard for me to breathe.”
So they laid Tobit on his bed, and he died. Then they gave him a funeral with great honor.
When Tobiah’s mother died, Tobiah buried her beside his father. Then he and his wife returned to Media and lived in Ecbatana with Raguel, his father-in-law.[#14:12 Some manuscripts add and children.]
Respecting the old age of his parents-in-law, he took care of them until they died. He buried them in Ecbatana of Media, and he inherited the property and possessions of Raguel, along with that of his father, Tobit.
Then Tobiah died and was buried with honor at the age of 117.
But before he died, he not only heard about the destruction of Nineveh but witnessed it as well. He saw its captives being taken to Media by King Cyaxares. Tobiah praised God for all that he had done to the people of Nineveh and Assyria. Before he died, he rejoiced over the destruction of Nineveh, and he praised the Lord God who lives forever and ever.[#14:15 Some manuscripts read Nebuchadnezzar; others read Ahasuerus.]
