Sound Teaching and Christian Living

But you are to proclaim things consistent with sound teaching.[#2:1 Ti 1:9]

Older men are to be self-controlled, worthy of respect, sensible, and sound in faith, love, and endurance.[#2:2 1Tm 5:1; #2:2 1Co 13:1; 1Jn 4:16]

In the same way, older women are to be reverent in behaviour, not slanderers, not slaves to excessive drinking. They are to teach what is good,[#2:3 1Tm 5:2]

so that they may encourage the young women to love their husbands and to love their children,

to be self-controlled, pure, workers at home, kind, and in submission to their husbands, so that God’s word will not be slandered.[#2:5 Lk 10:17; Eph 5:22; #2:5 Lk 8:21; 2Tm 2:15; Heb 4:12]

In the same way, encourage the young men to be self-controlled[#2:6 1Tm 5:1; 1Pt 5:5; 1Jn 2:13–14]

in everything. Make yourself an example of good works with integrity and dignity in your teaching.[#2:7 Other mss add and imperishability]

Your message is to be sound beyond reproach, so that any opponent will be ashamed, because he doesn’t have anything bad to say about us.[#2:8 1Tm 2:2]

Slaves are to submit to their masters in everything, and to be well-pleasing, not talking back[#2:9 Eph 6:5–9; Col 3:22; 1Tm 6:1; 1Pt 2:18; Jd 4; #2:9 Heb 13:21]

or stealing, but demonstrating utter faithfulness, so that they may adorn the teaching of God our Saviour in everything.[#2:10 1Tm 1:1; 2:3; Ti 1:3; 3:4; Jd 25]

For the grace of God has appeared, bringing salvation for all people,[#2:11 Or appeared with saving power; #2:11 Ac 1:8; Rm 10:14; 2Co 5:18–21; 1Tm 2:4; 4:10; 2Pt 3:9]

instructing us to deny godlessness and worldly lusts and to live in a sensible, righteous, and godly way in the present age,[#2:12 Jd 18; #2:12 2Tm 4:10; 2Pt 1:4; 2:10; #2:12 Lk 23:41; 1Co 15:34; 1Th 2:10; 1Pt 2:24; #2:12 2Tm 3:12]

while we wait for the blessed hope, the appearing of the glory of our great God and Saviour, Jesus Christ.[#2:13 Ac 23:6; 1Th 1:3; #2:13 Lk 9:32; Jn 17:1,24; 2Co 3:18; 2Pt 3:18]

He gave himself for us to redeem us from all lawlessness and to cleanse for himself a people for his own possession, eager to do good works.[#2:14 Mt 20:28; Mk 10:45; Rm 8:32; Gl 1:4; 2:20; Eph 5:2,25; 1Tm 2:6; #2:14 Ex 19:5; Lk 1:68]

Proclaim these things; encourage and rebuke with all authority. Let no one disregard you.[#2:15 Or despise]
