Psalm 33

The Steadfast Love of the Lord

1Shout for joy in the Lord , O you righteous![#Ps. 32:11]

Praise befits the upright.

2Give thanks to the Lord with the lyre;[#Ps. 71:22]

make melody to him with the harp of ten strings!

3Sing to him a new song;[#Ps. 40:3; 96:1; Isa. 42:10]

play skillfully on the strings, with loud shouts.

4For the word of the Lord is upright,

and all his work is done in faithfulness.

5He loves righteousness and justice;[#Ps. 11:7; 36:5, 6; 45:7; 89:14]

the earth is full of the steadfast love of the Lord .

6By the word of the Lord the heavens were made,[#Gen. 1:6, 7; Heb. 11:3; 2 Pet. 3:5; John 1:3]

and by the breath of his mouth all their host.

7He gathers the waters of the sea as a heap;[#Ps. 78:13; Ex. 15:8; Josh. 3:13, 16]

he puts the deeps in storehouses.

8Let all the earth fear the Lord ;

let all the inhabitants of the world stand in awe of him!

9For he spoke, and it came to be;[#Ps. 148:5, 6; Gen. 1:3; Ps. 147:15, 18]

he commanded, and it stood firm.

10The Lord brings the counsel of the nations to nothing;[#Isa. 19:3; Luke 1:51; 2 Sam. 15:34; 17:14; Neh. 4:15; Job 5:12; Isa. 8:10]

he frustrates the plans of the peoples.

11The counsel of the Lord stands forever,[#Prov. 19:21; Isa. 46:10]

the plans of his heart to all generations.

12Blessed is the nation whose God is the Lord ,[#Ps. 144:15; Deut. 33:29]

the people whom he has chosen as his heritage!

13The Lord looks down from heaven;[#Job 28:24; Ps. 11:4]

he sees all the children of man;

14from where he sits enthroned he looks out[#1 Kgs. 8:39, 43, 49; #Prov. 15:3; Jer. 32:19]

on all the inhabitants of the earth,

15he who fashions the hearts of them all

and observes all their deeds.

16The king is not saved by his great army;[#Ps. 44:6]

a warrior is not delivered by his great strength.

17The war horse is a false hope for salvation,[#Ps. 20:7; 147:10; Prov. 21:31; Hos. 1:7]

and by its great might it cannot rescue.

18Behold, the eye of the Lord is on those who fear him,[#Ps. 34:15; Job 36:7; 1 Pet. 3:12]

on those who hope in his steadfast love,

19that he may deliver their soul from death[#Acts 12:11]

and keep them alive in famine.

20Our soul waits for the Lord ;[#Ps. 62:1, 5; 130:6; Isa. 8:17]

he is our help and our shield.

21For our heart is glad in him,[#Zech. 10:7; Ps. 9:14]

because we trust in his holy name.

22Let your steadfast love, O Lord , be upon us,

even as we hope in you.
