Hosea 1

God Commands Hosea to Start a Family

¹The word of Yahweh that came to Hosea son of Beeri, in the days of Uzziah, Jotham, Ahaz, and Hezekiah, the kings of Judah, and in the days of Jeroboam the son of Joash, king of Israel.

²At the beginning when Yahweh spoke through Hosea,[#Literally “At the beginning of the talking of Yahweh”]

Yahweh said to Hosea,

³So he went and took Gomer daughter of Diblaim,

⁴And Yahweh said to him,

“Name him Jezreel;

⁵On that day[#Literally “And it will happen on that day”]

⁶And she conceived again and bore a daughter, and he said to him,[#Yahweh]

“Name her Lo-ruhamah,

for I will no longer have pity

⁷But I will have pity on the house of Judah

and will not deliver them

⁸And when she had weaned Lo-ruhamah, she conceived and bore a son.[#Lo-ruhamah means “Not pitied”]

⁹And he said, “Name him Lo-ammi,[#Yahweh; #Literally “Call his name”; #Lo-ammi means “not my people”]

and in the place where it is said to them,

it will be said to them,

¹¹Then the children of Judah

and they will appoint for themselves

and they will take possession of the land,
