Deuteronomy, meaning 'second law,' presents Moses' final speeches to the people of Israel on the plains of Moab before entering the Promised Land. The book is essentially a renewal of the Sinai covenant for the new generation about to possess Canaan. Moses recapitulates Israel's history, re-expounds the law, and establishes principles for life in the new land. Deuteronomy emphasizes love and obedience to Yahweh as the only source of blessing, and warns about the consequences of apostasy.
