Jeremiah 2

Yahweh Remembers Israel’s Faithfulness

1And the word of Yahweh came to me, saying,[#Literally “to say”]

2“Go and proclaim in the ears of Jerusalem, saying, ‘Thus says Yahweh,[#Literally “to say”]

“I remember concerning you the loyal love of your childhood,

your going after me in the desert,

3Israel was holy to Yahweh,

All those who ate it were held guilty;

The Unfaithfulness of Israel’s Ancestors

4Hear the word of Yahweh, O house of Jacob, and all the clans of the house of Israel.[#Or “families”]

5Thus says Yahweh:

“What injustice did your ancestors find in me

and they went after the vanity,

6And they did not say,

the one who brought us up from the land of Egypt,

in a land of desert plains and gorges,

in a land that no one passes through,

7And I brought you to the land of the orchard,

But you entered and defiled my land,

8The priests did not say, ‘Where is Yahweh?’

and the shepherds have rebelled against me,

and they went after things which do not profit.

The Unfaithfulness of Contemporary Israel

9Therefore I again bring a lawsuit against you,” declares Yahweh,[#Literally “To thus”; #Literally “a declaration of”]

10For go over to the coasts of Cyprus and look,

11Has a nation exchanged gods? And they are not gods!

12Be appalled, O heavens, at this, and shudder;

13“For my people have committed two evils:

14Is Israel a slave? Or a slave born in a house?[#Literally “born of a house”]

15The young lions have roared against him,

And they have made his land as horror;

16Moreover, people of Memphis and Tahpanhes

17Did you not do this to yourself,

18And now why do you go the way of Egypt[#Literally “what for you”]

And why do you go the way of Assyria

19Your wickedness will chastise you,

Therefore know and see that it is evil and bitter,

and fear of me is not in you,”

20“For from long ago you have broken your yoke,

And you said, ‘I will not serve!’

21Yet I planted you as a choice vine,

How then have you altered before me

22For if you wash with natron,

your guilt is sticking as a stain before me,”

23“How can you say, ‘I have not defiled myself,

Look at your way in the valley,

You are a young she-camel,

24A wild ass accustomed to the desert,[#Or “wilderness”]

She gasps for wind in her rutting time.

All those who seek her will not grow weary,

25Restrain your foot from being barefoot,

But you said, ‘It is hopeless.

26As the shame of a thief when he is caught in the act,

They, their kings, their officials,

27Those who say to the tree, ‘You are my father,’

For they have turned their backs to me, and not their faces.

28But where are your gods that you made for yourself?

For according to the number of your towns

29Why do you complain to me?

30“For in vain I have struck your children.[#Literally “the vanity”]

Your sword devoured your prophets,

31O generation, you see the word of Yahweh.

Why do my people say, ‘We roam about freely,

32Can a young woman forget her ornaments? Or a bride her sashes?[#Or “jewelry”]

33How well you do on your way to seek love!

34Also on your skirts is found

You did not find them in the act of breaking into a house.

35yet you say, ‘But I am innocent,

Look, I am entering into judgment with you

36How you go about so much changing your way!

37Also from there you will come out

for Yahweh has rejected those in whom you trust,
