Lamentations 5

A Request for Mercy

Remember, O Yahweh, what has become of us;

take note, and see our disgrace!

Our inheritance has been turned over to strangers,

We have become orphans, fatherless,

We pay for water with money,[#Literally “we drink our water by money”]

We are driven on our necks;

We have made a deal with Egypt and Assyria

Our fathers have sinned, they are no more;

Slaves rule over us;

We risk our life for food[#Literally “We take our food at our life”]

Our skin is hot like an oven

They raped women in Zion,

They hang princes by their hand;

Young men must carry a hand-mill

Elders are no longer at the gate,

The joy of our hearts has stopped;

The crown has fallen from our head;

Because of this, our heart has become faint,

Because of Mount Zion, which lies desolate,

You, O Yahweh, will sit forever

Why have you forgotten us forever?

Restore us to you, O Yahweh, that we will be restored;

Unless you have utterly rejected us,
