Proverbs of Solomon, son of David, king of Israel:
To know wisdom and instruction,
to gain insightful instruction,[#Literally “the instruction of insight”]
to give shrewdness to the simple,[#Or “cleverness,” or “prudence”]
may the wise hear and increase learning,
to understand a proverb and an expression,
Fear of Yahweh is the beginning of knowledge;
My child, may you keep your father’s instruction,[#Or “obey,” or “hear”]
for they are a garland of favor for your head,
My child, if sinners entice you, do not consent.
If they say,
Like Sheol, we will swallow them alive[#A term for the place where the dead reside, i.e., the Underworld]
We shall find all precious wealth,
you shall throw your lot in our midst,
My child, do not walk in their way.[#Or “on their road”]
for their feet run to evil,
for “in vain is the net scattered,[#Or “without cause,” or “for nothing”]
They lie in wait for their own blood.
Thus are the ways of all who are greedy for gain—
Wisdom calls out in the streets,
On a busy corner she cries out,[#Literally “head of commotion,” or “head of stirring, bustling”]
“How long, O simple ones, will you love simplicity?[#Literally “Until when”]
May you turn to my argument![#Or “turn at my reproach”]
Because I called out and you refused me,
You have ignored all my counsel,
I will also laugh at your calamity;[#Or “downfall”]
When your panic comes like a storm,
then they will call me, but I will not answer;[#Or “cry out to”]
Since they hated knowledge,
they were not willing to accept my counsel,
They shall eat from the fruit of their way,
for the waywardness of the simple ones will kill them,
Whoever listens to me will dwell in security
