Holofernes commanded his servants to bring Judith inside the tent, where his silver dinnerware was set on a table with some of his own delicacies and his own wine.
But Judith said, “I cannot eat and drink these things without sinning. But I have enough to eat from the supply I brought with me.”
Holofernes said to her, “If your supply runs out, where can we get you more? For none of your people are here.”
Judith replied, “As surely as you live, my lord, I will not use up my supplies before the Lord uses me to carry out what he has planned.”
Then the servants of Holofernes took her to her own tent. She slept until midnight and then got up about two o’clock in the morning.
She sent a message to Holofernes asking permission to be allowed to go out and pray.
Holofernes commanded his personal bodyguards not to stop her. She was at the camp three days, and each night she went out to the valley of Bethulia and bathed at the spring.
After bathing, she asked the Lord, the God of Israel, to show her how to achieve victory for his people.
When she had purified herself, she returned and stayed in the tent all day until she ate her evening meal.
On the fourth day Holofernes held a private banquet for his personal staff. He did not invite any of his officers.
He said to Bagoas, the eunuch in charge of his personal affairs, “Persuade the Hebrew woman to join us, for I want her to eat and drink with us.
It would be a shame to let such a beautiful woman go without sleeping with her. If we fail to seduce her, she will laugh at us.”
So Bagoas went out to see Judith and said, “Would this lovely woman come to my lord as his guest of honor? Please come and enjoy our wine, and you will be treated like one of the Assyrian women who serve in the palace of Nebuchadnezzar.”
Judith replied, “Who am I to refuse my lord? I will do whatever he wants me to do, and it will be a joy to me until my dying day.”
So she dressed herself in all her beautiful clothing and feminine finery. Her maid went ahead and spread before Holofernes the lambskins Bagoas had provided for Judith’s bed and dining couch.
When Judith went in and lay down, Holofernes’ heart burned with passion, for he had been waiting for a chance to seduce her ever since he first saw her.
So Holofernes said to her, “Please, enjoy yourself! Have a drink!”
Judith said, “I will gladly drink, my lord, because today is the best day of my life.”
Then she took the food and drink her maid had prepared and ate and drank with him.
Holofernes was so pleased with her that he drank a great quantity of wine, much more than he had ever drunk before.
