Tobit 11

Tobit 11

The Journey Home

1When they came to Kaserin, which is near Nineveh, Raphael said to Tobiah,

2“You know that your father is old and blind.

3Therefore, let us go ahead of your wife to get the house ready before the others arrive.”

4So they went on ahead, and Tobiah’s dog followed them. As they traveled together, Raphael reminded Tobiah, “Make sure you’re ready to use the gall of the fish.”

5Anna sat looking down the road for her son, as she had been doing every day.

6When she saw them coming, she said to her husband, “Look, your son is coming, along with the man who went with him!”

7(Raphael had said to Tobiah, “I know that your father’s eyes will be healed.

8Anoint his eyes with the fish gall you carry. This will cause the cataracts to fall off, and your father will regain his sight and see the light.”)[#11:8 Greek white films; also in 11:13.]

9Anna ran to her son, embraced him, and said, “Now that I have seen you, my child, I can die in peace.” And she wept.

10Despite his blindness, Tobit stood up and, hurrying to meet his son, stumbled through the courtyard door. Tobiah approached him

11with the fish gall in his hand. He took hold of his father, blew into his eyes, and said, “Don’t be afraid, Father.”

12Then Tobiah took the medicine and put it on his father’s eyes,

13causing him some pain. Using both of his hands, Tobiah pulled the cataracts from Tobit’s eyes. Embracing Tobiah,

14Tobit wept and said, “I can see you, my son; you are the light of my eyes!” Then he said,

“Praise God.

Bless his great name.

Bless all his holy angels.

May his great name be over us,

and blessed be all his angels

for all eternity.

15Though he afflicted me,

now I see Tobiah, my son.”

So Tobit went inside, rejoicing and praising God as loudly as he could.

Tobiah told his father about the success of his journey—how he had gotten the money and married Sarah, the daughter of Raguel. Then he said that Sarah was at that very moment approaching the gate of Nineveh.

16Then Tobit, rejoicing and praising God, went out to meet his daughter-in-law at the gate of Nineveh. The people of Nineveh were amazed to see him walking along, fully restored and with no one leading him by the hand.

17Tobiah told them all that God had been merciful to his father and restored his sight. When Tobit met Sarah, the wife of his son, Tobiah, he blessed her by saying, “Come in, my daughter. Praise God, who has brought you to us, my daughter. Blessed be your father’s household, and blessed be my son, Tobiah, and you, my daughter. Come into your home now. May you have health, blessings, and joy.”

On that day there was rejoicing among all the Jews in Nineveh.

18Ahikar and his nephew Nadab came to join in the celebration with Tobit.[#11:18 Some manuscripts add They celebrated Tobiah’s wedding for seven days, and many gifts were given to him.]
