1 John 2

1 John 2

1My dear children, I’m writing this to you so that you may not sin. But if anyone does sin, then we have a friend who speaks to the Father for us. He’s Jesus Christ, the Blameless One

2who gave his life to pay for our sins. In fact, he not only paid for our sins, he also paid for the sins of the whole world.

Instructions About Loving and Hating Other Believers

3We know that we’ve come to know God if we obey his commands.

4If anyone says, “I know him,” but they don’t do what God commands, then they’re a liar and they’re not telling the truth.

5But if anyone does obey God’s word, then that person truly loves God. This is how we know we belong to him:

6Anyone who claims to belong to him must live just as Jesus did.

7Dear friends, I’m not writing you a new command. Instead, I’m writing one that you’ve heard before. You’ve had it since the beginning.

8But in a sense, I am writing you a new command. Its truth was shown in the way Jesus lived, and it’s also shown in the way you’re living. That’s because the darkness is passing away, and the true light is already shining.

9If someone claims to be in the light, but they hate a brother or sister, then they’re really still in the darkness.

10Anyone who loves their brother and sister lives in the light. There’s nothing in them that will make them fall into sin.

11But anyone who hates a brother or sister is in the darkness. They’re walking around in the darkness, and they don’t know where they’re going, because the darkness has made them blind.

Reasons for Writing

12Dear children, I’m writing to you

because your sins have been forgiven in Jesus’ name.

13Fathers, I’m writing to you

because you know the one who is from the beginning.

Young men, I’m writing to you

because you’ve won the battle over the evil one.

14Dear children, I’m writing to you

because you know the Father.

Fathers, I’m writing to you

because you know the one who is from the beginning.

Young men, I’m writing to you

because you’re strong.

God’s word lives in you,

and you’ve won the battle over the evil one.

Don’t Love the World

15Don’t love the world or anything that’s in it. If anyone loves the world, they don’t have any love for the Father in them.

16Here’s what people who belong to this world do. They try to satisfy what their wrong desires want. They long for what their sinful eyes look at. They take pride in what they have and what they do. All of this comes from the world. None of it comes from the Father.

17The world and its evil desires are passing away, but whoever does the will of God lives forever.

Warnings About Saying No to the Son

18Dear children, we’re living in the last days. You’ve heard that the great enemy of Christ is coming, and even now many enemies of Christ have already come. That’s how we know that these are the last days.

19These enemies left our community of believers, but they didn’t really belong to us. If they had belonged to us, they would have stayed with us. By leaving, they showed that none of them really belonged to us.

20But the Holy One has made the Spirit flow all over you, just as if you’d had sacred oil poured on your head, and so all of you know the truth.

21I’m not writing to you because you don’t know the truth. I’m writing because you do know it and because no lie comes from the truth.

22Who is the liar? It’s anyone who says that Jesus isn’t the Christ. Any person who says this is the great enemy of Christ.

23They’re denying both the Father and the Son. No one who denies the Son has the Father. But whoever accepts the Son has the Father too.

24Make sure that what you’ve heard from the beginning remains in you. If it does, then you’ll remain in the Son and in the Father.

25And this is what God has promised us: eternal life.

26I’m writing these things to warn you about people who are trying to lead you astray.

27But you have the Holy Spirit flowing over you, and the Spirit continues to live in you. So you don’t need anyone to teach you. The Spirit teaches you about everything, and his presence in you is real, not fake. So remain in Christ, just as you’ve been taught.

God’s Children and Sin

28And now, dear children, continue in him, so that when he appears, we can be confident and not ashamed to meet him when he comes.

29You know that God always does what is right, so you also know that everyone who does what is right is God’s child.
