Instructions on Prayer

¹First of all, then, I urge that petitions, prayers, intercessions, and thanksgivings be made for everyone,

²for kings and all those who are in authority, so that we may lead a tranquil and quiet life in all godliness and dignity.[#2:2 Ezr 6:10; Rm 13:1; 1Co 2:1; #2:2 2Pt 1:3; #2:2 1Tm 3:4; Ti 2:7]

³This is good, and it pleases God our Saviour,[#2:3 1Tm 1:1]

⁵For there is one God and one mediator between God and mankind, the man Christ Jesus,[#2:5 Dt 6:4; Gl 3:20; #2:5 Heb 8:6; #2:5 Jn 1:14; Php 2:7; 3:3; 1Jn 4:2; 5:20]

⁶who gave himself as a ransom for all, a testimony at the proper time.[#2:6 Mt 20:28; Gl 1:4]

Instructions to Men and Women

⁸Therefore, I want the men in every place to pray, lifting up holy hands without anger or argument.[#2:8 Mk 7:21; Lk 9:46–47; 24:38; Rm 14:1; Php 2:14]

⁹Also, the women are to dress themselves in modest clothing, with decency and good sense, not with elaborate hairstyles, gold, pearls, or expensive apparel,[#2:9 1Pt 3:3; #2:9 Rv 3:18]

¹⁰but with good works, as is proper for women who profess to worship God.[#2:10 2Co 9:8; Gl 3:10]

¹¹A woman is to learn quietly with full submission.[#2:11 1Co 14:34; Ti 2:5]

¹²I do not allow a woman to teach or to have authority over a man; instead, she is to remain quiet.
