1Jonah prayed to the Lord his God from the belly of the fish:[#2:1 Jb 13:15; Ps 130:1–2; Lm 3:53–56]
2I called to the Lord in my distress,[#2:2 1Sm 30:6; Ps 18:4–6; 22:24; 120:1]
and he answered me.
I cried out for help from deep inside Sheol;
you heard my voice.
3When you threw me into the depths,[#2:3 Ps 69:1–2,14–15; Lm 3:54]
into the heart of the seas,
the current overcame me.
All your breakers and your billows swept over me.
4And I said, ‘I have been banished[#2:4 Lv 21:7]
from your sight,
yet I will look once more
towards your holy temple.’
5The water engulfed me up to the neck; ,[#2:5 Or me, threatening my life; #2:5 Ps 69:1–2; 105:18; Pr 23:2; Lm 3:54]
the watery depths overcame me;
seaweed was wrapped round my head.
6I sank to the foundations of the mountains,[#2:6 Ps 116:3]
the earth’s gates shut behind me for ever!
Then you raised my life from the Pit, Lord my God!
7As my life was fading away,[#2:7 Ps 142:3]
I remembered the Lord ,
and my prayer came to you,
to your holy temple.
8Those who cherish worthless idols[#2:8 2Kg 17:15; Ps 31:6; Jr 16:18]
abandon their faithful love,
9but as for me, I will sacrifice to you[#2:9 Ps 50:14,23; Jr 33:11; Hs 14:2]
with a voice of thanksgiving.
I will fulfil what I have vowed.
Salvation belongs to the Lord .
10Then the Lord commanded the fish, and it vomited Jonah onto dry land.[#2:10 Jnh 1:17]
