Numbers 19

Chapter 19

Rules to make people clean from sin

The Lord said to Moses and Aaron,

‘This is another rule that the Lord has commanded in his Law . Tell the Israelites to bring you a young red cow that is perfect . It must not have anything wrong with it. Nobody must have put a yoke on it.[#19:2 A farmer would put a on a cow or a to make it work with a .]

You must give the cow to Eleazar the priest . He must take it outside the camp . People must kill it there while Eleazar watches.

Eleazar must use his finger to take some of the blood from the cow. He must turn towards the Tent of Meeting and splash the blood seven times in that direction.

Then people must burn the whole cow while Eleazar is watching. They must burn its body completely, with the skin, the meat, the blood and everything that is inside its body.

The priest must then take some wood, some hyssop leaves and some red wool . He must throw these things on the fire where the cow is burning.

Then the priest must wash his clothes and wash his whole body with water. After that, he can come into the camp, but he will continue to be unclean until the evening.

The man who burns the cow must also wash his clothes in water, as well as his whole body. He will continue to be unclean until the evening.

Then a man who is clean must pick up all the ashes of the red cow. He must put them in a clean place outside the camp. Keep them safe there for the Israelites to use. Mix the ashes with water. That water will cause unclean people to become clean again. It is water to make people clean from their sin .

The man who picks up the cow's ashes must also wash his clothes. He will continue to be unclean until evening. This rule will be for all time, for the Israelites and for foreign people who are living among them.

Any person who touches a dead body will be unclean for seven days.

He must use the water to wash himself on the third day and on the seventh day. Then he will be clean again. If he does not wash himself on the third day and on the seventh day, he will not be clean.

If anyone touches the body of a dead person and he does not make himself clean again, he causes the Lord 's tabernacle to become unclean . You must remove that person from among the Israelites. He continues to be unclean because he did not splash the special water on himself.

This is another rule: When someone dies in a tent , anyone who goes into the tent will be unclean for seven days. Everyone who is in the tent will become unclean.

Any pot or bowl in the tent that does not have a lid will also become unclean.

These people also become unclean: anyone who touches the dead body of a person out in the country. Somebody may have killed the dead person or they may have died by themselves. Also, anyone who touches a human bone or the grave of a dead person. All these people will be unclean for seven days.[#19:16 See Matthew 23:27.]

When a person has become unclean , this is how to make them clean again: Take some of the ashes from the red cow that was burned. Put the ashes in a jar and pour some fresh water over them.

Then someone who is clean must take a branch of hyssop. He must put it into the water. He must use the hyssop to splash the water on the tent and on everything that is in it. He must also splash the water on all the people who have been in the tent. He must also splash it on anyone who has touched a human bone or a dead body or someone's grave.

The clean person must splash the water on the unclean person on the third day and on the seventh day. On the seventh day he will cause the person to be clean again. Then the unclean person must use water to wash his clothes and his whole body. In the evening, that person will be clean again.

But if an unclean person does not make himself clean in this way, you must remove that person from among the Israelites. He has caused the Lord 's holy tent to become unclean. He did not use the special water that makes people clean. So he continues to be unclean.

This is a rule for all time for the people. The man who splashes the special water on unclean people must wash his clothes. Anyone who touches the special water will be unclean until evening.

If an unclean person touches anything, that thing also becomes unclean. If anyone else touches the unclean thing, he also will be unclean until evening.’
