1Peter, an apostle of Jesus Christ,
To the refugees scattered throughout Pontus, Galatia, Cappadocia, Asia, and Bithynia,
2elect according to the foreknowledge of God the Father, through sanctification by the Spirit, for obedience and sprinkling with the blood of Jesus Christ:[#Ro 11:2; #2Th 2:13; #Heb 12:24]
Grace to you and peace be multiplied.
3Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who according to His abundant mercy has given us a new birth into a living hope through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead,[#2Co 1:3; #1Co 15:20]
4to an incorruptible and undefiled inheritance that does not fade away, kept in heaven for you,[#Col 1:5; 2Ti 4:8]
5who are protected by the power of God through faith for a salvation ready to be revealed in the last time.[#Eph 2:8]
6In this you greatly rejoice, even though now, if for a little while, you have had to suffer various trials,[#Ro 5:2; #Jas 1:2]
7in order that the genuineness of your faith, being much more precious than gold that perishes, though it is tried by fire, may be found to result in praise, honor, and glory at the revelation of Jesus Christ,[#Job 23:10; #Pr 17:3; Isa 48:10]
8whom, having not seen, you love; and in whom, though you do not see Him now, you believe and you rejoice with joy unspeakable and full of glory,[#Jn 20:29; Heb 11:27]
9receiving as the result of your faith the salvation of your souls.[#Ro 6:22]
10Concerning this salvation, the prophets who prophesied of the grace that should come to you have inquired and searched diligently,[#Mt 13:17; Lk 10:24]
11seeking the events and time the Spirit of Christ, who was within them, signified when He foretold the sufferings of Christ and the glories to follow.[#2Pe 1:21; #Isa 52:13–14]
12It was revealed to them that they were serving not themselves, but us, concerning the things which are now announced to you, by those who have preached the gospel to you, through the Holy Spirit sent from heaven —things into which angels desire to look.[#Jn 15:26]
13Therefore, prepare your minds for action; be sober, and set your hope fully upon the grace that will be brought to you at the revelation of Jesus Christ.[#1Pe 4:7; 5:8]
14As obedient children do not conduct yourselves according to the former lusts in your ignorance.[#Ac 17:30; Ro 12:2]
15But as He who has called you is holy, so be holy in all your conduct,[#2Co 7:1; Heb 12:14]
16because it is written, “Be holy, for I am holy.”[#Lev 11:44; 19:2; #1:16 Lev 11:44; 19:2; 20:7.]
17And if you address as Father the One who impartially judges according to each one’s work, conduct yourselves in fear during the time of your sojourning.[#Mt 6:9]
18For you know that you were not redeemed from your vain way of life inherited from your fathers with perishable things, like silver or gold,[#1Co 6:20]
19but with the precious blood of Christ, as of a lamb without blemish and without spot.[#Ex 12:5; Jn 1:29]
20He was foreordained before the creation of the world, but was revealed in these last times for you.[#Eph 1:4; Rev 13:8; #Col 1:26; Heb 9:26]
21Through Him you believe in God who raised Him up from the dead and gave Him glory, so that your faith and hope might be in God.[#Jn 12:44; #Heb 2:9]
22Since your souls have been purified by obedience to the truth through the Spirit unto a genuine brotherly love, love one another deeply with a pure heart,[#Heb 13:1; #Jas 4:8]
23for you have been born again, not from perishable seed, but imperishable, through the word of God which lives and abides forever.[#Heb 4:12; 1Pe 1:3]

“All flesh is as grass,
and all the glory of man as the flower of grass.
The grass withers, and its flower falls away,
