Hebrews 10

Hebrews 10

Christ’s Sacrifice Is Once and for All Time

1The law is only a shadow of the good things that are coming. It’s not the real things themselves. That’s why the law can never, through the same sacrifices that are repeated endlessly year after year, make perfect the people who come near to worship.

2If it could, wouldn’t those sacrifices have stopped being offered? The worshipers would have been made clean once and for all time. They wouldn’t feel guilty for their sins anymore.

3But those offerings remind people of their sins every year,

4because it’s impossible for the blood of bulls and goats to take away sins.

5That’s why Christ said, when he came into the world,

“You didn’t want sacrifices and offerings.

Instead, you prepared a body for me.

6You weren’t pleased

with burnt offerings and sin offerings.

7Then I said, ‘Here I am. As it’s written about me in the book,

I’ve come to do your will, my God.’ ”

8First he said, “You didn’t want sacrifices and offerings, and you weren’t pleased with burnt offerings and sin offerings.” He said this even though these things were being offered as the law required.

9Then he said, “Here I am, I’ve come to do your will.” He sets aside the sacrifices and offerings in favor of the will of God.

10And by that will, we’ve been made holy through the sacrifice of the body of Jesus Christ once and for all time.

11Day after day every priest stands and performs his special duties. He offers the same sacrifices again and again, even though they can’t ever take away sins.

12But when Jesus, our priest, had offered one sacrifice for sins for all time, he sat down at the right hand of God.

13Since that time, he’s been waiting for his enemies to be put under his control.

14By that one sacrifice he has made perfect forever those who are being made holy.

15The Holy Spirit also speaks to us about this. First he says,

16“This is the covenant I will establish with the people of Israel

after that time, says the Lord.

I will put my laws in their minds

and write them on their hearts.”

17Then he adds,

“I will forget their evil ways,

and I won’t remember their sins anymore.”

18And where these sins have been forgiven, a sacrifice for sin is no longer necessary.

An Appeal and Warning to Remain Faithful

19Brothers and sisters, we have the confidence to enter the Most Holy Place because of the blood of Jesus.

20He has opened a new and life-giving way for us through the curtain, that is, his body.

21We also have a great priest over the house of God.

22So let’s draw near to God with a sincere heart and with the full assurance that faith brings. Our hearts have been sprinkled to cleanse us from a guilty conscience, and our bodies have been washed with pure water.

23Let’s hold firmly to the hope we say we have, because the one who promised is faithful.

24And let’s consider how we can stir one another up to love and good works.

25Let’s not give up meeting together, as some are in the habit of doing. Instead, let’s encourage one another. And let’s meet and encourage one another even more as we see the day of Christ’s return approaching.

26If we deliberately keep on sinning after we’ve come to know the truth, then there’s no offering left for our sins.

27All we can do is to wait in fear for God’s punishment and the blazing fire that will burn up his enemies.

28If anyone broke the law of Moses, that person would die without mercy if two or three witnesses gave evidence against them.

29But wouldn’t people deserve even more punishment if they’ve trampled the Son of God under their feet, treated the blood of the covenant as unholy, and insulted the Spirit of grace?

30We know the God who said, “I’m the God who judges people, and I will pay them back.” Scripture also says, “The Lord will judge his people.”

31It’s a terrible thing to fall into the hands of the living God.

32Remember those earlier days after you received the light. You remained strong in a great struggle even though you suffered greatly.

33Sometimes people spoke badly about you in front of others. Sometimes you were mistreated. At other times you stood side by side with people who were being treated like that.

34You suffered along with people in prison, and when your property was taken from you, you accepted that with joy, because you knew that God had given you better and more lasting things.

35So don’t throw away your confidence. It will be richly rewarded.

36You need to stand firm so that when you’ve done God’s will, you’ll receive what he has promised.

37“In just a little while,

he who is coming will come.

He won’t wait any longer.”

38And,

“The one who’s right with God will live by faith.

But I’m not pleased with

the one who pulls back.”

39We’re not among the people who pull back and are destroyed. We’re among the people who have faith and are saved.
