When the wedding festivities ended, Tobit said to Tobiah, “My son, take care of paying the wages of the man who traveled with you, and give him a bonus as well.”
Tobiah replied, “How much should I pay him, Father? How about half of the possessions I brought back with me?
He brought me back safely to you, he healed my wife, he brought the money back with me, and he healed you. How much extra shall I give him as a bonus?”
Tobit said, “My son, he deserves to receive half of all he has brought back.”
So Tobiah said to Raphael, “For your wages, accept half of everything you brought back. Now go in peace.”
Then Raphael took the two men aside privately and said, “Praise God, and tell everyone about the good things he has done for you. Sing praises to his name. Honor God by telling everyone his words. Don’t hold back from telling about him.
While it is good to hide the secret of a king, it is also good to reveal and praise the works of God.
“Do good so that evil will not overtake you.
Prayer made with true sincerity is good, and charitable acts done with justice are better than wealth gotten by unjust means. It is better to give to the poor than to store up treasures of gold.[#12:8 Some manuscripts read with fasting.]
For charitable giving saves us from death and cleanses us from sin. Those who give charitably will be satisfied.
Those who do evil and commit sin are their own worst enemies.
“Now I will tell you the truth, hiding nothing from you. I already hinted at it when I said, ‘While it is good to hide the secret of a king, it is also good to reveal and praise the works of God.’
When you prayed, Tobit, and when Sarah prayed, it was I who brought your prayer into the presence of the glorious Lord. And I was there whenever you buried the dead.
When you left your dinner to bury a dead man, I was sent to test you.
At the same time, God sent me to heal you and your daughter-in-law.
I am Raphael, one of the seven angels who stand ready and enter the glorious presence of the Lord.”
Tobit and Tobiah were greatly shaken. They fell with their faces to the ground.
But Raphael said to them, “Do not be afraid; peace be with you. Praise God forever.
When I was with you, I was there by the will of God. Praise him each and every day. Sing his praises.
(By the way, if you thought I ate and drank with you, it was only imaginary—a vision.)
Praise the Lord of the earth, and publicly acknowledge God. See, I am ascending to the one who sent me. Write down all the things that have happened to you.” Then he ascended to heaven.[#12:20 Some manuscripts read So now get up off the ground.]
They stood up and saw him no more.
Then they kept blessing God and singing his praises, and they openly acknowledged God for the wonderful things that happened when God’s angel appeared to them.
