From Peter, an apostle of Jesus Christ.
To God’s chosen people, who are living away from their land. You’re scattered throughout the provinces of Pontus, Galatia, Cappadocia, Asia, and Bithynia.
God the Father knew you ahead of time, and he chose to make you pure and holy through the Spirit’s work. Then you would obey Jesus Christ and be sprinkled with his blood to make you holy.
May more and more grace and peace be given to you.
May the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ be praised! In his great mercy he has given us a new birth into a living hope because Jesus Christ rose from the dead.
God has given us an inheritance that can never be destroyed, spoil, or fade away. It’s kept in heaven for us.
Through faith you are protected by God’s power until the coming of the salvation that will be revealed in the end.
You rejoice greatly because of all this, even though for a little while you may have had to suffer sadness in all kinds of troubles.
These have come to show that your faith is genuine. This will bring praise, honor, and glory to God when Jesus Christ returns. Your faith is worth even more than gold, because gold can be destroyed even after fire has made it pure.
Even though you’ve never seen Jesus, you love him. Though you don’t see him now, you believe in him and you’re filled with a glorious joy that can’t be put into words.
You’re receiving the salvation of your souls, which is the final result of your faith.
The prophets who spoke about the grace that was coming to you tried very hard and carefully to find out about this salvation.
The Spirit of Christ in them was telling about the sufferings of the Messiah and the glory that would follow. They wanted to find out when and how this salvation would come.
The prophets were shown that they weren’t serving themselves. Instead, they were serving you when they spoke about the things that you’ve now heard from those who preached the good news to you with the help of the Holy Spirit sent from heaven. Even angels long to look into these things.
So make sure your minds stay alert and completely sober. Put your hope in the grace that will be brought to you when Jesus Christ returns.
As obedient children, don’t give in to the wrong desires you had when you didn’t know any better.
God, who chose you, is holy. So you should be holy in all that you do.
It is written, “Be holy, because I am holy.”
You call on a Father who judges each person’s work without favoring one person over another. So live with the highest respect for God during your time as outsiders here.
You were set free from the empty way of life that was handed down to you by your own people from long ago. You know that you were not bought with things that can pass away, like silver or gold.
Instead, you were bought with the priceless blood of Christ. He was a perfect lamb without any flaws at all.
He was chosen before God created the world, and he was revealed for your sake in these last times.
Through him you believe in God, who raised him from the dead and gave him glory. So your faith and hope are in God.
You’ve made yourselves pure by obeying the truth. Now, you have an honest and true love for each other. So love one another deeply from your hearts.
You’ve been born again through the living word of God, which lasts forever. You haven’t been born again from a seed that will die, but from one that can’t die.
It is written,
“All people are like grass,
and all their glory is like the flowers in the field.
The grass dries up and the flowers fall to the ground,
but the word of the Lord lasts forever.”
And this is the word that was preached to you.
