Matthew 28

The Resurrection

Now after the Sabbath, toward the dawn of the first day of the week, Mary Magdalene and the other Mary went to see the tomb.[#Mark 16:1-8; Luke 24:1-10; John 20:1; #27:56, 61]

And behold, there was a great earthquake, for an angel of the Lord descended from heaven and came and rolled back the stone and sat on it.[#John 20:12]

His appearance was like lightning, and his clothing white as snow.[#Dan. 10:6; #Dan. 7:9; Mark 9:3; John 20:12; Acts 1:10]

And for fear of him the guards trembled and became like dead men.[#Rev. 1:17]

But the angel said to the women, “Do not be afraid, for I know that you seek Jesus who was crucified.

He is not here, for he has risen, as he said. Come, see the place where he lay.[#27:63; #28:6 Some manuscripts]

Then go quickly and tell his disciples that he has risen from the dead, and behold, he is going before you to Galilee; there you will see him. See, I have told you.”[#10, 16; 26:32]

So they departed quickly from the tomb with fear and great joy, and ran to tell his disciples.[#Ps. 2:11]

And behold, Jesus met them and said, “Greetings!” And they came up and took hold of his feet and worshiped him.[#Mark 16:9; John 20:14; #2 Kgs. 4:27; #17; Luke 24:52]

Then Jesus said to them, “Do not be afraid; go and tell my brothers to go to Galilee, and there they will see me.”[#John 20:18; #John 20:17; Ps. 22:22; Rom. 8:29; Heb. 2:11, 12, 17]

The Report of the Guard

While they were going, behold, some of the guard went into the city and told the chief priests all that had taken place.[#27:65, 66]

And when they had assembled with the elders and taken counsel, they gave a sufficient sum of money to the soldiers

and said, “Tell people, ‘His disciples came by night and stole him away while we were asleep.’[#27:64]

And if this comes to the governor’s ears, we will satisfy him and keep you out of trouble.”[#27:2; #Acts 12:20 (Gk.)]

So they took the money and did as they were directed. And this story has been spread among the Jews to this day.[#27:8]

The Great Commission

Now the eleven disciples went to Galilee, to the mountain to which Jesus had directed them.[#7]

And when they saw him they worshiped him, but some doubted.[#9]

And Jesus came and said to them, “All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me.[#11:27; Dan. 7:13, 14; John 3:35; 13:3; 17:2; Acts 2:36; Rom. 14:9; 1 Cor. 15:27; Eph. 1:10, 20-22; Phil. 2:9, 10; Col. 2:10; Heb. 1:2; 2:8; 1 Pet. 3:22; 9:6; John 5:27; #6:10; Luke 2:14]

Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit,[#Mark 16:15, 16; #13:52; #Luke 24:47; 24:14; Mark 11:17; Rom. 1:5; #Mark 16:15, 16; #Acts 8:16; #28:19 Or into; #2 Cor. 13:14]

teaching them to observe all that I have commanded you. And behold, I am with you always, to the end of the age.”[#John 14:15; #Acts 1:2; #1:23; 18:20; John 12:26; 14:3; 17:24; Acts 18:10; #13:39]
