Ephesians 5

Ephesians 5

There shouldn’t be even a hint of any sexual sin among you, or of anything impure or greedy, because those are not the kinds of things that God’s holy people should do.

There must not be any bad language or foolish talk or dirty jokes. Those are inappropriate. Instead, you should give thanks.

You can be sure that no one who’s immoral, impure, or greedy will receive a share in the kingdom of Christ and of God, because they’re really serving a false god.

Don’t listen to anyone’s excuses for living like that, because it’s disobedience, and it makes God very angry.

So don’t take part in things like that.

You used to be darkness, but now you’re light in the Lord. Live as children of the light.

The light produces what is completely good, right, and true.

So find out what pleases the Lord,

and don’t have anything to do with the acts of darkness. They never produce anything good. Show what those acts are really like.

It’s shameful even to talk about what disobedient people do in secret.

But everything that’s brought into the light can be seen for what it really is. And everything that the light shines on becomes a light itself.

That’s why it’s said,

“Wake up, sleeper,

rise from the dead,

and Christ will shine on you.”

So be very careful how you live. Don’t live as people who aren’t wise; live as people who are wise.

Make the most of every opportunity, because the days are evil.

So don’t be foolish. Instead, understand what the Lord wants.

Don’t get drunk with wine, which leads to wild living. Instead, be filled with the Spirit.

Speak to one another with psalms, hymns, and songs from the Spirit. Sing and make music from your heart to the Lord,

always giving thanks to God the Father for everything in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ.

Follow one another’s lead out of respect for Christ.

Wives, follow the lead of your own husbands as a way of following the Lord’s lead.

The husband is the head of the wife, just as Christ is the head of the church. The church is Christ’s body and he is its Savior.

The church follows the lead of Christ, and in the same way, wives should follow the lead of their husbands in everything.

Husbands, love your wives, just as Christ loved the church and gave himself up for her.

He did this to make her holy, washing her with water through the word.

That way he could present her to himself as a radiant church that had no stain or wrinkle or any other flaw, but was holy and blameless.

In the same way, husbands should love their wives as they love their own bodies. Any man who loves his wife loves himself.

After all, no man ever hated his own body. Instead, he feeds and cares for it. And this is what Christ does for the church,

because we are parts of his body.

Scripture says, “That’s why a man will leave his father and mother and be joined to his wife, and the two will become one.”

That is a great mystery, and I’m applying it here to Christ and the church.

But the point remains that a husband must also love his wife, just as he loves himself, and a wife must respect her husband.
