Jesus Is Greater Than Moses

¹Holy brothers and sisters, who take part in God’s calling, I want you to focus your attention on Jesus, who is the messenger and high priest of our faith.

²Jesus was faithful to the one who appointed him, just as Moses was faithful in God’s whole house.

³But Jesus has been found worthy of greater honor than Moses, just as the person who builds a house is honored more than the house itself.

⁴Every house is built by someone, but God has built everything.

⁵“Moses was faithful as a servant in God’s whole house.” He was a witness to what God would say in the future.

⁶But Christ is faithful over God’s house as his Son. And we are his house, if we hold tightly to our courage and the hope we boast about.

A Warning Against Unbelief

⁷The Holy Spirit says,

“Today, if you hear his voice,

⁸don’t be stubborn,

the way you were when you rebelled against me

in the time of testing in the desert.

⁹There your people of long ago tested me,

even though for 40 years they saw what I did.

¹⁰That’s why I was angry with them

and said, ‘Their hearts are always going astray,

they haven’t known my ways.’

¹¹So when I was angry, I swore an oath:

‘They’ll never enter the rest I planned for them.’ ”

¹²Brothers and sisters, make sure that none of you has a sinful, unbelieving heart that turns away from the living God.

¹³Instead, encourage one another every day, while it’s still called “Today,” so that sin doesn’t deceive any of you and harden you.

¹⁴We have come to share in Christ, but we need to maintain right to the end the confidence we started with.

¹⁵As it has just been said,

“Today, if you hear his voice,

don’t be stubborn,

the way you were when you rebelled against me.”

¹⁶Who were those who heard but rebelled? Weren’t they all the people that Moses led out of Egypt?

¹⁷Who was God angry with for 40 years? Wasn’t he angry with those who sinned, who died in the desert?

¹⁸And who did God swear an oath about, that they would never enter the rest he planned for them? Didn’t he swear that oath about the people who didn’t obey?

¹⁹So we see that because they didn’t believe, they weren’t able to enter.
