Matthew 7

Matthew 7

Judging Others

1“Y’all shouldn’t judge, so that y’all won’t be judged.

2For in the way y’all judge, y’all will be judged; and with the measure y’all use, it will be measured to y’all.

3Why do you see the speck in your sibling’s eye, but don’t notice the beam in your own eye?

4Or how can you tell your sibling, ‘Let me remove the speck from your eye,’ when there is a beam is in your own eye?

5You hypocrite! First remove the beam from your own eye, and then you can see clearly to remove the speck from your sibling’s eye.

6“Y’all shouldn’t give what is holy to the dogs or throw your* pearls before the pigs, or they will trample them under their feet, and turn and tear y’all to pieces.

Ask, Seek, Knock

7“If y’all ask, it will be given y’all. If y’all seek, y’all will find. If y’all knock, it will be opened for y’all.

8For everyone who asks receives. The one who seeks finds. To the one who knocks, it will be opened.

9Or what human among y’all who, if their son asks for bread, will give him a stone?

10Or if he asks for a fish, who will give him a serpent?

11If y’all then, being evil, know how to give good gifts to y’all’s children, how much more will y’all’s Father who is in heaven give good things to those who ask him!

12Therefore, whatever y’all want humans to do for y’all, y’all should do for them, for this is the law and the prophets.

Two Gates: Narrow and Wide

13“Y’all must enter through the narrow gate. For the gate is wide and the way is broad that leads to destruction, and there are many who enter in by it.

14How narrow is the gate and difficult is the way that leads to life! There are few who find it.

Two Prophets: True and False

15“Y’all beware of false prophets, who come to y’all in sheep’s clothing, but inwardly are ravening wolves.

16Y’all will know them by their fruits. Do people gather grapes from thorns or figs from thistles?

17In the same way, every good tree produces beautiful fruit, but a bad tree produces bad fruit.

18A good tree can’t produce bad fruit, neither can a bad tree produce beautiful fruit.

19Every tree that doesn’t produce beautiful fruit is cut down and thrown into the fire.

20Therefore y’all will know them by their fruits.

Two Disciples: True and False

21“Not everyone who says to me, ‘Lord, Lord,’ will enter into the Empire of Heaven, but the one who does the will of my Father who is in heaven.

22Many will say to me on that day, ‘Lord, Lord, didn’t we prophesy in your name, in your name cast out demons, and in your name do many mighty works?’

23Then I will tell them, ‘I never knew y’all. Depart from me, y’all evildoers.’

Two Foundations: Wise and Foolish

24“Therefore everyone who hears these words of mine and does them, I will liken them to a wise person who built their house on a rock.

25The rain fell, the floods came, and the winds blew and beat on that house; and it didn’t fall, for it was founded on the rock.

26Everyone who hears these words of mine and doesn’t do them will be like a foolish person who built their house on the sand.

27The rain fell, the floods came, and the winds blew and beat on that house; and it fell—and its fall was great.”

28When Jesus finished saying these things, the crowds were astonished at his teaching,

29for he taught them with authority, unlike the scribes.
