Mark 10

Mark 10

Concerning Divorce

Mt 19:1–12

1He arose and went from there to the region of Judea to the other side of the Jordan, and the people came to Him again. And again, as was His custom, He taught them.[#Jn 10:40; 11:7]

2The Pharisees came to test Him, asking, “Is it lawful for a man to divorce his wife?”[#Jn 8:6]

3He answered them, “What did Moses command you?”

4They said, “Moses permitted a man to write a certificate of divorce and to divorce her.”[#Dt 24:1–4]

5But Jesus said to them, “Due to the hardness of your heart he wrote you this precept.[#Mt 19:8]

6But from the beginning of the creation, God ‘made them male and female.’[#Ge 1:27; 5:2; #10:6 Ge 1:27.]

7‘For this cause shall a man leave his father and mother, and cling to his wife,[#Ge 2:24; Eph 5:31]

8and the two shall be one flesh.’ So then they are no longer two, but one flesh.[#10:7–8 Ge 2:24.; #1Co 6:16]

9What therefore God has joined together, let not man put asunder.”

10In the house His disciples asked Him concerning this matter again.

11He said to them, “Whoever divorces his wife and marries another commits adultery against her.[#Lk 16:18]

12And if a woman divorces her husband and marries another, she commits adultery.”[#1Co 7:11]

Little Children Blessed

Mt 19:13–18; Lk 18:15–17

13They brought young children to Him, that He might bless them. But the disciples rebuked those who brought them.

14But when Jesus saw it, He was very displeased and said to them, “Allow the little children to come to Me, and do not forbid them, for of such is the kingdom of God.

15Truly I say to you, whoever does not receive the kingdom of God as a little child shall not enter it.”[#Mt 18:3; Lk 18:17]

16And He took them up in His arms, put His hands on them, and blessed them.[#Mk 9:36]

The Rich Man

Mt 19:16–30; Lk 18:18–30

17When He set out on His way, a man came running and knelt before Him, and asked Him, “Good Teacher, what must I do to inherit eternal life?”[#Mk 1:40]

18He said to him, “Why do you call Me good? No one is good, except God alone.

19You know the commandments, Do not commit adultery, Do not murder, Do not steal, Do not bear false witness, Do not defraud, Honor your father and mother. ”[#Ex 20:12–17; Dt 5:16–20; #10:19 Ex 20:12–16; Dt 5:16–20.]

20He said to Him, “Teacher, all these have I observed from my youth.”[#Mt 19:20; Php 3:6]

21Then Jesus, looking upon him, loved him and said to him, “You lack one thing: Go your way, sell whatever you have and give to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven. And come, take up the cross and follow Me.”[#Lk 12:33; Ac 2:45]

22He was saddened by that word, and he went away grieving. For he had many possessions.[#Eze 33:31]

23Jesus looked around and said to His disciples, “How hard it will be for those who have wealth to enter the kingdom of God!”

24The disciples were astonished at His words. But Jesus answered again, “Children, how hard it is for those who trust in riches to enter the kingdom of God![#Ps 52:7; Pr 11:28]

25It is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle than for a rich man to enter the kingdom of God.”

26They were astonished beyond measure, saying among themselves, “Who then can be saved?”

27Jesus, looking at them, said, “With men it is impossible, but not with God. For with God all things are possible.”[#Job 42:2; Mt 19:26]

28Peter began to say to Him, “Look, we have left everything and have followed You.”

29Jesus said, “Truly I say to you, there is no one who has left a house or brothers or sisters or father or mother or wife or children or fields, for My sake and for the gospel’s sake,[#Mk 8:35]

30who shall not receive a hundred times as much now in this age, houses and brothers and sisters and mothers and children and fields, with persecution, and in the age to come, eternal life.[#Mt 12:32]

31But many who are first will be last, and the last first.”[#Mt 19:30; 20:16]

Jesus Foretells His Death and Resurrection a Third Time

Mt 20:17–19; Lk 18:31–34

32They were on the way, going up to Jerusalem, and Jesus went ahead of them. And they were amazed, and those who followed were afraid. Again, He took the twelve aside and began to tell them what would happen to Him,[#Lk 9:51]

33saying, “Listen! We are going up to Jerusalem. The Son of Man will be handed over to the chief priests and the scribes, and they will condemn Him to death and hand Him over to the Gentiles.[#Mt 16:21; 27:2]

34They will mock Him, and scourge Him, and spit on Him, and kill Him. Then after three days He will rise.”[#Mt 26:67]

The Request of James and John

Mt 20:20–28

35Then James and John, the sons of Zebedee, came to Him, saying, “Teacher, we want that whatever we may ask, You would do for us.”

36He said to them, “What do you want Me to do for you?”[#Mk 10:51]

37They said to Him, “Grant us to sit, one at Your right hand and the other at Your left hand, in Your glory.”[#Mt 19:28]

38But Jesus said to them, “You do not know what you are asking. Can you drink the cup that I drink and be baptized with the baptism with which I am baptized?”[#Isa 51:22; #Lk 12:50]

39They said to Him, “We can.”

Jesus said to them, “You will indeed drink the cup that I drink and be baptized with the baptism with which I am baptized.

40But to sit at My right hand or at My left hand is not Mine to grant. It is for those for whom it has been prepared.”[#Mt 25:34]

41When the ten heard it, they began to be very displeased with James and John.

42But Jesus called them together, and said, “You know that those who are appointed to rule over the Gentiles lord it over them, and their great ones exercise authority over them.[#Lk 22:25; 1Pe 5:3]

43But it shall not be so among you. Whoever would be great among you must be your servant,[#Mk 9:35; Lk 9:48]

44and whoever among you would be greatest must be servant of all.

45For even the Son of Man came not to be served, but to serve, and to give His life as a ransom for many.”[#Isa 53:10–12; Mt 20:28]

The Healing of Blind Bartimaeus

Mt 20:29–34; Lk 18:35–43

46Then they came to Jericho. And as He went out of Jericho with His disciples and a great number of people, blind Bartimaeus, the son of Timaeus, sat along the way begging.[#Jn 9:8]

47When he heard that it was Jesus of Nazareth, he began to cry out, “Jesus, Son of David, have mercy on me!”[#Mt 9:27; Mk 1:24]

48Many ordered him to keep silent. But he cried out even more, “Son of David, have mercy on me!”[#Mt 19:13]

49Jesus stood still and commanded him to be called.

So they called the blind man, saying, “Be of good comfort. Rise, He is calling you.”

50Throwing aside his garment, he rose and came to Jesus.

51Then Jesus said to him, “What do you want Me to do for you?”[#Mk 10:36]

The blind man said to Him, “Rabbi, that I might receive my sight.”

52Jesus said to him, “Go your way. Your faith has made you well.” Immediately he received his sight and followed Jesus on the way.[#Mt 9:22; Mk 5:34]
