Then Judith said to them, “Listen to me, brothers and sisters. Take this head and hang it on the battlements of your wall.[#14:1 Greek brothers.]
When morning comes and the sun is up, every able-bodied man should go out of the town with his weapons. Appoint a leader over them, as if you were going down to the plain to attack the Assyrian scouts—only don’t really go.
The scouts will grab their weapons and run into the camp and wake up the officers. They will all rush to the tent of Holofernes, but when they cannot find him, they will panic and flee before you.
Then you and all who live within the borders of Israel will chase them and cut them down in their tracks.
But before you do all this, bring Achior the Ammonite to identify this man who despised the people of Israel and who thought he was sending Achior to his death by sending him to us.”
So they called Achior, who was staying in the home of Uzziah. When he came and saw one of the men holding Holofernes’ head, he fell to the ground in a faint.
When they revived him, he threw himself at Judith’s feet and honored her. He said, “May you be blessed by every family of Judah! In every nation, those who hear your name will be afraid.
How in the world did you do this?”
So Judith, surrounded by all the people, told him everything she had done, from the day she left until that moment.
When she finished, the people cheered, rejoicing throughout the town.
When Achior saw all that the God of Israel had done, he became a firm believer in God. So he was circumcised and joined the people of Israel, remaining so to this day.
As soon as it was dawn, the people of Bethulia hung Holofernes’ head on the wall. Then they all took their weapons and went in companies to the mountain passes.
When the Assyrians saw them, they sent word to their commanders, who reported the news to the generals and captains and all their other officers.
The officers went to Holofernes’ tent and said to the man in charge of Holofernes’ personal affairs, “Wake up our lord, for those slaves are so bold they are attacking us—but we will destroy them!”
Bagoas went inside and knocked at the inner entrance of the tent, for he thought Holofernes was sleeping with Judith.
But when no one answered, he opened it and went into the bedchamber and found Holofernes’ dead body lying on the floor with his head cut off.
Bagoas cried out in anguish, wept, moaned, shouted, and tore his clothes.
Then he ran to the tent where Judith had stayed. When he saw that she was gone, he ran out to the people and shouted,
“Those slaves have tricked us! A single Hebrew woman has disgraced the whole house of King Nebuchadnezzar. Look, Holofernes is lying dead on the ground, and his head is missing!”
When the leaders of the Assyrian army heard this, they tore their clothing in terror and distress, and their loud cries and shouts rang throughout the camp.
