One of the seven angels who had the seven bowls came to me and said, “Come, I’ll show you how the great prostitute is going be punished. She’s the one who sits on many waters.
The kings of the earth took part in the wrong things she did, and the people living on earth became drunk with the wine of her terrible sins.”
Then the angel carried me away in the Spirit to a desert. There I saw a woman sitting on a bright red beast that was covered with names that said insulting things about God. The beast had seven heads and ten horns.
The woman was dressed in purple and bright red, and she was gleaming with gold, jewels, and pearls. In her hand she held a golden cup filled with things that God hates—her appalling, repulsive sins.
The name written on her forehead was a mystery. Here’s what it said.
I saw that the woman was drunk with the blood of the saints, those who are witnesses about Jesus.
When I saw her, I was very amazed.
Then the angel said to me, “Why are you so amazed? I’ll explain the mystery of the woman to you, and I’ll explain the mystery of the beast she rides on, the one that has the seven heads and ten horns.
The beast that you saw used to exist, but now it doesn’t, and yet it will come up out of the Abyss and then be destroyed. Anyone living on the earth whose name has not been written in the book of life from the time the world was created will be amazed when they see the beast, because it will come again, even though it used to exist but now it doesn’t.
“Here’s a problem needing wisdom and careful thinking. The seven heads are seven hills that the woman sits on.
They’re also seven kings. Five have died, one is ruling, and the other has still not come. When he does come, he will remain for only a little while.
The beast who used to exist, but doesn’t anymore, is an eighth king. He belongs to the other seven, and he will be destroyed.
“The ten horns you saw are ten kings. They haven’t yet begun to rule, but for a short time they will receive authority to rule together with the beast.
They will all agree about what they want to do, so they’ll give their power and authority to the beast.
They’ll fight a war against the Lamb, but the Lamb will win the victory over them. That’s because he’s the most powerful Lord of all and the greatest King of all. His appointed, chosen, and faithful followers will be with him.”
Then the angel said to me, “The waters you saw, which the prostitute was sitting on, stand for the races, multitudes, nations, and languages of the world.
The beast and the ten horns you saw will hate the prostitute. They’ll destroy her and take away her expensive clothes; they’ll devour her flesh and burn her with fire.
God has put it into their hearts to carry out his purpose by agreeing to give the beast their royal authority until God’s words come true.
The woman you saw stands for the great city that rules over the kings of the earth.”
