Psalms 18

Psalms 18

1I love you, YHWH, my strength.

2YHWH is my rock, my fortress, and my deliverer,

my God is my boulder where I take refuge,

my shield, and the horn of my salvation, my high tower.

3I called to YHWH, who is worthy of praise,

and I have been saved from my enemies.

4The ropes of death surrounded me.

The torrents of destruction terrified me.

5The ropes of Sheol encircled me.

The snares of death confronted me.

6In my distress I called on YHWH,

and to my God I cried.

Hᴇ heard my voice from ʜɪꜱ temple.

My cry came before ʜɪᴍ into ʜɪꜱ ears.

7Then the earth shook and quaked,

and the foundations of the mountains trembled and were shaken,

because ʜᴇ burned with anger.

8Smoke ascended from ʜɪꜱ nostrils.

A devouring fire came from ʜɪꜱ mouth,

and coals were kindled by it.

9Hᴇ parted the heavens and came down.

A gloom of darkness was under ʜɪꜱ feet.

10Hᴇ mounted a cherub and flew,

soaring on the wings of the wind.

11Hᴇ made darkness ʜɪꜱ covering, a canopy around ʜɪᴍ,

enveloped by the darkness of waters and storm clouds.

12From the radiance of ʜɪꜱ presence came ʜɪꜱ storm clouds,

hailstones, and fiery coals.

13YHWH thundered from heaven.

The Most High offered ʜɪꜱ voice as

hailstones and fiery coals.

14Hᴇ sent out ʜɪꜱ arrows and scattered them,

ʜᴇ launched great lightning bolts and confused them.

15Then the channels of waters appeared.

The foundations of the world were laid bare at your rebuke, YHWH,

at the blast of the breath of your nostrils.

16Hᴇ reach down from on high and took me.

Hᴇ pulled me out of deep waters.

17Hᴇ rescued me from my fierce enemy,

from those who hated me, for they were too strong for me.

18They confronted me in the day of my calamity,

but YHWH was my support.

19Hᴇ brought me out into a spacious place.

Hᴇ delivered me, because ʜᴇ delighted in me.

20YHWH has rewarded me according to my righteousness.

According to the cleanness of my hands, ʜᴇ has repaid me.

21For I have kept the ways of YHWH,

and have not acted wickedly toward my God.

22For all ʜɪꜱ ordinances were before me.

I did not turn away ʜɪꜱ statutes.

23I was blameless toward ʜɪꜱ.

I kept myself from my sin.

24YHWH has rewarded me according to my righteousness,

according to the cleanness of my hands in ʜɪꜱ eyes.

25With the faithful you will show yourself faithful.

With the complete person, you show yourself complete.

26With the pure, you show yourself pure.

With the crooked you show yourself shrewd.

27For you save the oppressed people,

but the arrogant eyes you will bring down.

28For you light my lamp, YHWH.

My God shines in my darkness.

29For with you, I can run against a troop,

and with my God, I leap over a wall.

30As for God, ʜɪꜱ way is complete.

The word of YHWH has been tested in the smelter.

Hᴇ is a shield to all who take refuge in ʜɪᴍ.

31For who is God but YHWH?

Who is a rock but our God?

32The one God arms me with strength,

and makes my way complete?

33Hᴇ makes my feet like deer’s feet,

and enables me to stand on my high places.

34Hᴇ trains my hands for battle,

my arms can bend a bow of bronze.

35You have given me the shield of your salvation.

Your right hand sustains me.

Your humility has made me great.

36You have enlarged my steps under me,

My feet have not slipped.

37I will pursue my enemies and overtake them.

I won’t turn back until they are consumed.

38I will smash them, so they cannot rise.

They will fall under my feet.

39You have armed me with strength for battle.

You have bent the knees of those who rose up against me.

40You have also made my enemies turn their backs to me,

and I destroyed those who hate me.

41They cried, but there was no one to save,

Even to YHWH, but ʜᴇ did not answer them.

42I grind them until they are dust in the wind.

I pour them out like mud in the streets.

43You have delivered me from the hostility of the people.

You have made me the head of the nations.

A people I had not known will serve me.

44As soon as they hear of me they will obey me.

The foreigners will submit themselves to me.

45The foreigners will become faint,

and will come trembling from their strongholds.

46YHWH lives! Blessed be my rock.

Exalted be the God of my salvation,

47The one God who executes vengeance for me,

and arranges peoples under me.

48Hᴇ rescues me from my enemies.

Surely, you lift me up above those who rise up against me.

You delivered me from the violent man.

49Therefore I will give thanks to you, YHWH, among the nations,

and will sing praises to your name.

50Hᴇ gives great deliverance to ʜɪꜱ king,

and shows lovingkindness to ʜɪꜱ anointed,

to David and to his descendants forever more.
