Edom falls

¹The vision of Obadiah.

²Look now, I will make you of little importance among the nations;

³Your proud heart has tricked you—

You who say in your heart,

⁴Though you soar like the eagle,

Edom is robbed

⁵If thieves approach you,

If those who gather grapes came to you,

⁶How Esau has been looted,

⁷All those who were your allies

Those who were on your side tricked you

They are setting your own bread as a trap under you,

⁸Won’t I on that day, says the LORD ,

⁹Your warriors will be shattered, Teman,

Edom’s misdeeds

¹⁰Because of the slaughter and violence done to your brother Jacob,

¹¹You stood nearby,

and foreigners entered his gates

you too were like one of them.

¹²But you should have taken no pleasure over your brother

you shouldn’t have rejoiced over the people of Judah

you shouldn’t have bragged

¹³You shouldn’t have entered the gate of my people

you shouldn’t have even looked on his suffering

you shouldn’t have stolen his possessions

¹⁴You shouldn’t have waited on the roads

you shouldn’t have handed over his survivors

¹⁵The day of the LORD is near

As you have done, so it will be done to you;

¹⁶Just as you have drunk on my holy mountain,

they will drink and swallow quickly,

Edom’s punishers

¹⁷But on Mount Zion there will be those who escape,

¹⁸The house of Jacob will be a fire,

they will burn them up completely,

¹⁹Those of the arid southern plain will possess Mount Esau,

they will possess the land of Ephraim and the land of Samaria,

²⁰Those who remain of the Israelites

and those left from Jerusalem and who are now living in Sepharad

²¹The deliverers will go up to Mount Zion
