1After they had feasted, Tobiah wanted to go to bed with his bride. So the young woman’s parents took him to the bedroom.
2Remembering Raphael’s words, Tobiah took the fish’s liver and heart out of his bag, and he put them on burning incense.
3The odor of the fish repelled the demon, and it fled through the air to Upper Egypt. (But Raphael followed him there and completely subdued him.)
4When the parents had left and shut the bedroom door, Tobiah got up from the bed and said to Sarah, “Stand up, dear wife. We must pray to our Lord and ask him to grant us mercy and deliverance.[#8:4 Greek sister.]
5So she got up, and they began to pray, asking God for deliverance. Tobiah said,
“We praise you, God of our ancestors.
May your name be praised in all generations forever.
Let the heavens and all creation praise you forever.
6You made Adam, and then you made his wife, Eve,
as his helper and support.
And the entire human race has come from them.
You said, ‘It is not good for the man to be alone.
I will make a companion who will help him.’
7I do not take this woman as my wife[#8:7 Greek my sister.]
for any lustful reason,
but to show my fidelity.
Grant us your mercy,
and may she and I grow old together.”
8They both said, “Amen, Amen.”
9Then they went to bed and slept together.
But during the night Raguel arose and called his servants to help him dig a grave.
10He said, “Perhaps the man will die, so we will bury him before we are criticized and ridiculed.”
11When they had dug the grave, Raguel went back to his wife at the house and said to her,
12“Send one of your servant girls to see if Tobiah is still alive. If he is dead, we can bury him before it is daylight so that no one will know.”
13So they sent one of the servants, who took a lighted lamp into the bedroom. She found them safe and sound, sleeping together.
14So the servant came out and told the parents, “He is alive. Nothing is wrong.”
15Then they blessed the God of heaven. Raguel said,
“We praise you, O God, with pure blessings.
May you be praised forever!
16May you be praised because you have given me joy.
It has not turned out as I had expected,
but you have shown us your great mercy.
17We praise you for having mercy
on these two children.
O Master, give them mercy and safety.
May their lives be filled with joy and mercy.”
18Then Raguel commanded his servants to fill up the grave before dawn.
19Raguel asked his wife to prepare many loaves of bread. He also slaughtered two cows and four young rams in preparation for a feast.
20And he said to Tobiah, “You must stay here with me for fourteen days, eating and drinking and cheering up my daughter, for she has been depressed.
21Take half of what I own, and return safely to your father. The other half will be yours when my wife and I die. Be encouraged, my son. I am your father and Edna is your mother, and all of us—including your wife—belong to you forever. Be encouraged, my son.”[#8:21 Greek sister.]
