Then Jesus was led up by the Spirit into the wilderness to be tempted by the devil.[#4:1–11 Mk 1:12–13; Lk 4:1–13; #4:1 Jos 15:61; Jdg 1:16; Jn 1:6–7; Jms 1:14]
After he had fasted for forty days and forty nights, he was hungry.[#4:2 Ex 34:28; 1Kg 19:8; Jn 9:4]
Then the tempter approached him and said, ‘If you are the Son of God, tell these stones to become bread.’[#4:3 Mk 3:11; 5:7; Lk 1:35; 4:41; Jn 1:34,49; Ac 9:20]
He answered, ‘It is written: "Man must not live on bread alone but on every word that comes from the mouth of God." ’ ,[#4:4 Dt 8:3; #4:4 Dt 8:3]
Then the devil took him to the holy city, stood him on the pinnacle of the temple,[#4:5 Neh 11:1,18; Dn 9:24; Mt 27:53]
and said to him, ‘If you are the Son of God, throw yourself down. For it is written:
Jesus told him, ‘It is also written: "Do not test the Lord your God." ’ ,[#4:7 Dt 6:16; 1Sm 7:3; 1Ch 21:1; #4:7 Dt 6:16]
Again, the devil took him to a very high mountain and showed him all the kingdoms of the world and their splendour.
And he said to him, ‘I will give you all these things if you will fall down and worship me.’[#4:9 Or and pay me homage]
Then Jesus told him, ‘Go away, Satan! For it is written: "Worship the Lord your God, and serve only him." ’ ,[#4:10 Other mss read ‘Get behind me; #4:10 Dt 6:13; #4:10 Dt 6:13; 1Ch 21:1]
Then the devil left him, and angels came and began to serve him.[#4:11 Mt 26:53; Lk 22:43; Heb 1:14]
When he heard that John had been arrested, he withdrew into Galilee.[#4:12 Mt 14:3; Mk 1:14; Lk 3:20; Jn 3:24; #4:12 Lk 4:14; Jn 1:43; 2:11]
He left Nazareth and went to live in Capernaum by the sea, in the region of Zebulun and Naphtali.[#4:13 Mk 1:21; 2:1; Lk 4:23; Jn 2:12; 4:46]
This was to fulfil what was spoken through the prophet Isaiah:
From then on Jesus began to preach, ‘Repent, because the kingdom of heaven has come near.’[#4:17 Mt 3:2; 5:3,10,19–20; 7:21; 8:11; Mk 1:14]
As he was walking along the Sea of Galilee, he saw two brothers, Simon (who is called Peter), and his brother Andrew. They were casting a net into the sea #– #for they were fishermen.[#4:18–22 Mk 1:16–20; Lk 5:2–11; Jn 1:40–42; #4:18 Mt 15:29; Mk 7:31; Lk 5:1; Jn 6:1]
‘Follow me,’ he told them, ‘and I will make you fish for people.’[#4:19 Or you fishers of]
Immediately they left their nets and followed him.
Going on from there, he saw two other brothers, James the son of Zebedee, and his brother John. They were in a boat with Zebedee their father, preparing their nets, and he called them.
Immediately they left the boat and their father and followed him.
Now Jesus began to go all over Galilee, teaching in their synagogues, preaching the good news of the kingdom, and healing every disease and sickness among the people.[#4:23–25 Mk 1:35–39; Lk 4:42–44; #4:23 Or every kind of; #4:23 Or physical ailment; #4:23 Mt 13:54; 24:14; Ac 10:38]
Then the news about him spread throughout Syria. So they brought to him all those who were afflicted, those suffering from various diseases and intense pains, the demon-possessed, the epileptics, and the paralytics. And he healed them.[#4:24 Lk 2:2; Ac 15:23; Gl 1:21; #4:24 Mt 8:16; 9:32; Mk 5:15; Jn 10:21]
Large crowds followed him from Galilee, the Decapolis, Jerusalem, Judea, and beyond the Jordan.[#4:25 Mk 3:7; 5:20; Lk 6:17]
