Haggai 2

Haggai 2

The Future Glory of the Temple

1In the seventh month, on the twenty-first day of the month, the word of the Lord came by Haggai the prophet, saying:[#Hag 1:1]

2Speak now to Zerubbabel the son of Shealtiel, governor of Judah, and to Joshua the son of Jehozadak, the high priest, and to all the remnant of the people, saying:

3Who is left among you who saw this house in its former glory? How do you see it now? Is it not, in your eyes, as nothing in comparison?[#Ezr 3:12]

4Yet now be strong, O Zerubbabel, says the Lord , and be strong, O Joshua, son of Jehozadak, the high priest. Be strong all you people of the land, says the Lord . Work, for I am with you, says the Lord of Hosts.[#Zec 8:9; #Jos 1:9; 2Sa 5:10]

5According to the covenant that I made with you when you came out of Egypt, so My Spirit remains among you. Do not fear.[#Ex 29:45–46; #Ne 9:20]

6For thus says the Lord of Hosts: Once more, in a little while, I will shake the heavens and earth, the sea and dry land.[#Isa 10:25; 29:17; #Hag 2:21]

7And I will shake all the nations, and they will come with the wealth of all nations, and I will fill this house with glory, says the Lord of Hosts.[#1Ki 8:11; Isa 60:7]

8The silver is Mine, and the gold is Mine, says the Lord of Hosts.[#Isa 60:17]

9The glory of this latter house will be greater than the former, says the Lord of Hosts. And in this place I will give peace, says the Lord of Hosts.

Blessings on a Defiled People

10On the twenty-fourth day of the ninth month, in the second year of Darius, the word of the Lord came by Haggai the prophet, saying:[#Hag 1:1; 2:20]

11Thus says the Lord of Hosts: Now ask the priests concerning the law, saying,[#Lev 10:10–11; Mal 2:7]

12If a man carries holy meat in the fold of his garment, and touches with his fold bread or stew, or wine or oil, or any food, will it become holy?[#Lev 6:27; Mt 23:19]

The priests answered, “No.”

13Then Haggai said, “If one who is unclean by contact with a dead body touches any of these, will it become unclean?”[#Lev 22:4–6]

The priests answered, “It will become unclean.”

14Then Haggai said, So it is with this people, and so it is with this nation before Me, says the Lord , and so with every work of their hands; and what they offer there is unclean.[#Isa 1:11–15]

15Now consider from this day onward: from before stone was laid upon stone in the temple of the Lord ,[#Ezr 3:10]

16from those days when one came to a heap of twenty measures, there were but ten. When one came to the wine vat to draw fifty measures, there were but twenty.[#Hag 1:6]

17I struck you and all the labor of your hands with blight and mildew and hail; yet you did not turn to Me.[#Dt 28:22; 1Ki 8:37]

18Consider from this day onward, from the twenty-fourth day of the ninth month, from the day when the foundation of the temple of the Lord was laid, consider:[#Hag 2:15; Zec 8:9]

19Is the seed yet in the barn? As of yet, the vine, the fig tree, the pomegranate, and the olive tree have yielded nothing.[#Hab 3:17]

But from this day on I will bless you.

The Promise of God to Zerubbabel

20The word of the Lord came a second time to Haggai on the twenty-fourth day of the month:

21Speak to Zerubbabel, governor of Judah, saying, I will shake the heavens and the earth.[#Ezr 5:2; Hag 1:1; #Hag 2:6–7]

22I will overthrow the throne of the kingdoms. I will destroy the strength of the kingdoms of the nations. I will overthrow the chariots and their riders. The horses and their riders will come down, every one by the sword of his brother.[#Mic 5:10; #Jdg 7:22]

23On that day, says the Lord of Hosts, I will take you, O Zerubbabel My servant, the son of Shealtiel, says the Lord , and I will make you like a signet ring, for I have chosen you, says the Lord of Hosts.[#Isa 42:1; 43:10]
