1For the law is a shadow of the good things to come, and not the very image of those things. It could never by the same sacrifices, which they offer continually year after year, perfect those who draw near.[#Heb 8:5; 9:11]
2Otherwise, would they not have ceased to be offered, since the worshippers, once purified, would no longer be conscious of sins?
3But in those sacrifices there is an annual reminder of sins.[#Heb 9:7]
4For it is not possible for the blood of bulls and goats to take away sins.[#Heb 10:11]
5Therefore, when He came into the world, He said:[#Heb 1:6]
“Sacrifices and offerings You did not desire,
but a body You have prepared for Me.
6In burnt offerings and sacrifices for sin
You have had no pleasure.
7Then I said, ‘Behold, I have come to do Your will, O God,’ as it is written of Me
in the volume of the book.”
8Previously when He said, “You did not desire sacrifices and offerings. You have had no pleasure in burnt offerings and sacrifices for sin,” which are offered in accordance with the law,[#Heb 10:5; #10:8 Ps 40:6.]
9then He said, “Behold, I have come to do Your will, O God.” He takes away the first that He may establish the second.[#Heb 10:7; #10:9 Ps 40:8.]
10By this will we have been sanctified through the offering of the body of Jesus Christ once for all.[#Jn 17:19; Heb 2:11]
11But every priest stands daily ministering and repetitively offering the same sacrifices, which can never take away sins.[#Heb 5:1; #Heb 10:4]
12But this Man, after He had offered one sacrifice for sins forever, sat down at the right hand of God.[#Heb 1:3]
13Since that time He has been waiting for His enemies to be made His footstool.[#Ps 110:1; Heb 1:13]
14For by one offering He has forever perfected those who are sanctified.[#Heb 10:1]
15The Holy Spirit also witnesses to us about this. For after saying,[#Heb 3:7]
16“This is the covenant that I will make with them
after those days, says the Lord:
I will put My laws into their hearts,
and in their minds I will write them,”
17then He adds,
“Their sins and lawless deeds
will I remember no more.”
18Now where there is forgiveness of these, there is no longer an offering for sin.
19Therefore, brothers, we have confidence to enter the Most Holy Place by the blood of Jesus,[#Eph 2:18; Heb 4:16]
20by a new and living way that He has opened for us through the veil, that is to say, His flesh,[#Jn 10:9; Heb 9:3]
21and since we have a High Priest over the house of God,[#1Ti 3:15; Heb 2:17]
22let us draw near with a true heart in full assurance of faith, having our hearts sprinkled to cleanse them from an evil conscience, and our bodies washed with pure water.[#Heb 7:19; #Eze 36:25; 1Co 6:11]
23Let us firmly hold the confession of our hope without wavering, for He who promised is faithful.[#1Co 1:9; Heb 3:6]
24And let us consider how to spur one another to love and to good works.[#Titus 3:8; Heb 13:1]
25Let us not forsake the assembling of ourselves together, as is the manner of some, but let us exhort one another, especially as you see the Day approaching.[#Ac 2:42; #Heb 3:13]
26For if we willfully continue to sin after we have received the knowledge of the truth, there no longer remains a sacrifice for sins,[#Dt 17:12; Heb 6:4–6]
27but a fearful expectation of judgment and fiery indignation, which will devour the adversaries.[#Isa 26:11; Eze 36:5]
28Anyone who despised Moses’ law died without mercy in the presence of two or three witnesses.[#Dt 19:15; Heb 2:2]
29How much more severe a punishment do you suppose he deserves, who has trampled underfoot the Son of God, and has regarded the blood of the covenant that sanctified him to be a common thing, and has insulted the Spirit of grace?[#Eph 4:30; Heb 2:3]
30For we know Him who said, “Vengeance is Mine,” says the Lord, “I will repay.” And again He says, “The Lord will judge His people.”[#Ro 12:19; #10:30 Dt 32:35.; #Dt 32:35–36; Ps 135:14; #10:30 Dt 32:36.]
31It is a fearful thing to fall into the hands of the living God.[#Isa 33:14; Lk 12:5]
32Remember the former days, after you were enlightened, in which you endured a great struggle of afflictions.[#Heb 6:4; #Php 1:29–30]
33In part you were made a spectacle both by reproaches and afflictions. And in part you became companions of those who were so abused.[#1Co 4:9; #Php 4:14]
34For you had compassion on me in my chains and joyfully endured the confiscation of your property, knowing that you have in heaven a better and an enduring possession for yourselves.[#2Ti 1:16; #1Pe 1:4]
35Therefore do not throw away your confidence, which will be greatly rewarded.[#Heb 11:26]
36For you need patience, so that after you have done the will of God, you will receive the promise.[#Lk 21:19; Heb 12:1]
37For,
“In yet a little while,
He who is to come will come, and will not wait.
38Now the just shall live by faith;
but if anyone draws back,
My soul shall have no pleasure in him.”
39But we are not of those who draw back to destruction, but of those who have faith to the saving of the soul.
