Sirach (Ecclesiasticus) 25

Sirach (Ecclesiasticus) 25

Reasons for Happiness

1There are three things that please me,

for they are delightful to God and to all people:

harmony between brothers and sisters, friendship among neighbors,

and a wife and husband who live well together.

2There are three kinds of people I hate,

and I am disgusted by the way they live:

a poor person who boasts, a rich person who lies,

and an old fool who commits adultery.

3If you have gathered nothing in your youth,

how will you get anything in your old age?

4How beautiful it is to see sound judgment coming from gray-haired people

and good advice from the aged!

5How beautiful it is to see wisdom coming from the aged

and understanding and advice from the honorable!

6The crown of the aged is their ample experience,

and they take pride in their fear of the Lord.

7I can think of nine people whom I would call blessed

and a tenth, whom I will speak of:

a man who can rejoice in his children

and one who lives to see the downfall of his enemies.

8Blessed is the man who lives with a sensible wife.

Blessed is the one who does not sin by what he says

and the one who has not served a person who is inferior to himself.

9Blessed is the one who finds a friend[#25:9 As in Syriac; Greek reads good sense.]

and the one who has good listeners as his audience.

10How great is the one who finds wisdom!

But no one is superior to the person who fears the Lord.

11Fear of the Lord surpasses all things.

Those who have it are beyond compare.

Warnings against Wicked Women

13No wound is worse than a wound of the heart!

No wickedness is worse than the wickedness of a woman!

14No affliction is worse than the affliction from those who hate you!

And no vengeance is worse than the vengeance of your enemies!

15No poison is worse than that of a snake,[#25:15 As in Syriac; Greek reads No head.]

and no anger worse than a woman’s anger.

16I would rather live with a lion and a dragon

than live with an evil woman.

17A woman’s wickedness changes her appearance

and darkens her face like that of a bear.

18When her husband sits down to eat with neighbors,

he cannot restrain his bitter sighs.

19Any evil is insignificant compared to that of a woman.

May the fate of sinners overtake her!

20Just as climbing a sandy hill is difficult for the aged,

so is a talkative wife to a quiet man.

21Don’t be taken in by a woman’s beauty,

and don’t desire her for her possessions.

22There is anger, shamefulness, and great disgrace

when a wife must support her husband.

23Depression, sadness,

and a wounded heart are caused by an evil wife.

Feeble hands and weak knees

are caused by the wife who does not make her husband happy.

24Sin came about because of a woman,

and because of her we all die.

25Don’t allow a cistern to leak water

or an evil wife to speak arrogantly.

26If she does not follow your instructions,

send her away from you.
