When the Lamb opened the seventh seal, there was silence in heaven for about half an hour.
Then I saw seven trumpets being given to the seven angels who stand in front of God.
Another angel came and stood at the altar. He had a shallow gold cup for burning incense. He was given a large amount of incense to offer on the golden altar in front of the throne. With the incense he offered the prayers of all of God’s people.
The smoke of the incense rose up from the angel’s hand, and the prayers of God’s people rose up together with it in front of God.
Then the angel took the gold cup, filled it with fire from the altar, and threw it down on the earth, and there was thunder, loud noises, flashes of lightning, and an earthquake.
Then the seven angels who had the seven trumpets got ready to blow them.
The first angel blew his trumpet, and hail and fire mixed with blood were thrown down onto the earth. A third of the earth was burned up, a third of the trees were burned up, and all of the green grass was burned up.
The second angel blew his trumpet, and something that looked like a huge mountain burning with fire was thrown into the sea. A third of the sea turned into blood,
a third of the living creatures in the sea died, and a third of the ships were destroyed.
The third angel blew his trumpet, and a great star that looked like a blazing torch fell from the sky. It fell on a third of the rivers and on the springs of water.
The star is named Wormwood. A third of the water turned bitter, and many people died from it.
The fourth angel blew his trumpet, and a third of the sun was struck, a third of the moon was struck, and a third of the stars were struck, so that a third of each of them turned dark. Then a third of the day was without light, and so was a third of the night.
As I watched, I heard an eagle that was flying high in the air call out in a loud voice, “Woe! Woe! Woe to those living on the earth when the next three angels blow their trumpets!”
