1 Peter 2

The Living Stone and a Holy People

1So rid yourselves of all malice, all deceit, hypocrisy, envy, and all slander.[#Rm 13:12; #2Co 12:20]

2Like newborn infants, desire the pure spiritual milk, so that you may grow by it for your salvation,[#1Co 3:2; 9:7; Heb 5:12-13; #Other mss omit in your salvation]

3since you have tasted that the Lord is good.[#Heb 6:4-5; #Ps 34:8; Ti 3:4; #Ps 34:8]

4Coming to Him, a living stone — rejected by men but chosen and valuable to God —

5you yourselves, as living stones, are being built into a spiritual house for a holy priesthood to offer spiritual sacrifices acceptable to God through Jesus Christ.[#Rm 12:1; Heb 13:15]

6For it is contained in Scripture:

Look! I lay a stone in Zion,

a chosen and honored cornerstone,

and the one who believes in Him

will never be put to shame!

7So honor will come to you who believe, but for the unbelieving,

The stone that the builders rejected —

this One has become the cornerstone,

8and

A stone to stumble over,

and a rock to trip over.

They stumble because they disobey the message; they were destined for this.

9But you are a chosen race, a royal priesthood,[#Or generation, or nation; #Dt 7:6; 10:15; Is 43:20; #Dt 7:6; 10:15; Is 43:20 LXX; #Is 61:6; Rv 1:6; 5:10; 20:6; #Ex 19:6; 23:22 LXX; Is 61:6]

a holy nation, a people for His possession,

so that you may proclaim the praises

of the One who called you out of darkness

into His marvelous light.

10Once you were not a people,

but now you are God’s people;

you had not received mercy,

but now you have received mercy.

A Call to Good Works

11Dear friends, I urge you as strangers and temporary residents to abstain from fleshly desires that war against you.[#1Pt 1:1; #1Tm 4:3; #Rm 7:23; Php 3:3; #Or against the soul; #Gl 5:17; Jms 4:1]

12Conduct yourselves honorably among the Gentiles, so that in a case where they speak against you as those who do what is evil, they will, by observing your good works, glorify God on the day of visitation.[#2Pt 3:11; #Or among the nations, or among the pagans; #The day when God intervenes in human history, either in grace or in judgment; #Is 10:3; Jr 6:15; 8:12; 10:15; Lk 1:68; 7:16; 19:44]

13Submit to every human authority because of the Lord, whether to the Emperor as the supreme authority[#Rm 13:1-7; Ti 3:1; #Or creature; #Lit king; #Rm 13:1]

14or to governors as those sent out by him to punish those who do what is evil and to praise those who do what is good.

15For it is God’s will that you silence the ignorance of foolish people by doing good.[#Gl 1:4; Eph 1:9; #1Pt 3:16]

16As God’s slaves, live as free people, but don’t use your freedom as a way to conceal evil.[#Rm 1:1; Ti 1:1; Rv 2:20; #1Co 14:20]

17Honor everyone. Love the brotherhood. Fear God. Honor the Emperor.[#Rv 12:11; #Heb 13:1; 1Pt 5:9; #Pr 1:7; 24:21; Ac 10:2; Rv 14:7; #Lit king]

Submission of Slaves to Masters

18Household slaves, submit with all fear to your masters, not only to the good and gentle but also to the cruel.[#Rm 13:3,7; #Eph 6:5; Col 3:22; Ti 2:9; Jd 4; #Or unscrupulous ; lit crooked; #Php 2:15]

19For it brings favor if, mindful of God’s will, someone endures grief from suffering unjustly.[#Other mss add with God; #Other mss read if, because of a good conscience; #Lit if, because of conscience toward God]

20For what credit is there if you sin and are punished, and you endure it? But when you do what is good and suffer, if you endure it, this brings favor with God.[#1Pt 4:14]

21For you were called to this,

because Christ also suffered for you,

leaving you an example,

so that you should follow in His steps.

22He did not commit sin,[#1Pt 4:1; 1Jn 3:5]

and no deceit was found in His mouth;

23when He was reviled,

He did not revile in return;

when He was suffering,

He did not threaten

but entrusted Himself to the One who judges justly.

24He Himself bore our sins[#Heb 7:27-28; 9:27-28]

in His body on the tree,

so that, having died to sins,

we might live for righteousness;

you have been healed by His wounds.

25For you were like sheep going astray,[#Ps 119:176; Is 53:6; #Is 53:6]

but you have now returned

to the Shepherd and Guardian of your souls.
