1 Peter 3

Wives and Husbands

1In the same way, wives, submit yourselves to your own husbands so that, even if some disobey the Christian message, they may be won over without a message by the way their wives live[#Eph 5:22-33; Col 3:18-19; 1Tm 3:11; #1Co 7:16; #Lit may be gained; #1Co 9:19-22; Php 3:8; #2Pt 3:11]

2when they observe your pure, reverent lives.[#Ti 2:5]

3Your beauty should not consist of outward things like elaborate hairstyles and the wearing of gold ornaments or fine clothes.[#Lit and of putting around of gold items; #Is 3:18-24; 1Tm 2:9]

4Instead, it should consist of what is inside the heart with the imperishable quality of a gentle and quiet spirit, which is very valuable in God’s eyes.[#Lit Instead, the hidden man of; #Rm 2:29; 7:22; #Mt 5:5; #1Tm 2:2]

5For in the past, the holy women who put their hope in God also beautified themselves in this way, submitting to their own husbands,[#Ps 20:6; 1Co 7:14; #1Tm 5:5; 1Pt 1:3]

6just as Sarah obeyed Abraham, calling him lord. You have become her children when you do what is good and are not frightened by anything alarming.[#Gn 17:15-21; 18:6-15; Heb 11:11; #Pr 3:25]

7Husbands, in the same way, live with your wives with an understanding of their weaker nature yet showing them honor as coheirs of the grace of life, so that your prayers will not be hindered.[#Mt 1:19; 1Co 14:35; Eph 5:22-28; Col 3:18-19; Ti 2:4-5; #Lit understanding as the weaker vessel; #1Th 4:4]

Do No Evil

8Now finally, all of you should be like-minded and sympathetic, should love believers, and be compassionate and humble,[#Lit sympathetic, loving the brothers; #Heb 13:1; #Eph 4:32; #Other mss read courteous]

9not paying back evil for evil or insult for insult but, on the contrary, giving a blessing, since you were called for this, so that you can inherit a blessing.[#Rm 12:17; #Lk 6:28; Rm 12:14; 1Co 4:12]

10For the one who wants to love life[#Ps 34:12-16]

and to see good days

must keep his tongue from evil

and his lips from speaking deceit,

11and he must turn away from evil[#Ps 37:27]

and do what is good.

He must seek peace and pursue it,

12because the eyes of the Lord are on the righteous

and His ears are open to their request.

But the face of the Lord is against

those who do what is evil.

Undeserved Suffering

13And who will harm you if you are deeply committed to what is good?[#Or mistreat, or do evil to; #Or you are partisans for the good ; lit you are zealots]

14But even if you should suffer for righteousness, you are blessed. Do not fear what they fear or be disturbed,[#Mt 6:33; Rm 1:17; 2Pt 1:1; #Jn 6:20; 7:13; #Is 8:12-13; #Is 8:12]

15but honor the Messiah as Lord in your hearts. Always be ready to give a defense to anyone who asks you for a reason for the hope that is in you.[#Or sanctify ; lit set apart; #Other mss read set God; #Or who demands of you an accounting; #1Jn 4:4]

16However, do this with gentleness and respect, keeping your conscience clear, so that when you are accused, those who denounce your Christian life will be put to shame.[#Lit good; #Or keeping a clear conscience; #Ac 23:1; 24:16; Rm 9:1; 2Co 1:12; 1Tm 1:5,19; 3:9; Heb 10:22; 1Pt 3:21; #Other mss read when they speak against you as evildoers; #Lit your good behavior in Christ]

17For it is better to suffer for doing good, if that should be God’s will, than for doing evil.[#Php 1:29; 1Pt 2:19; #Lit if the will of God should will]

18For Christ also suffered for sins once for all,[#Mk 8:31; Rm 5:8; #Other mss read died for sins on our behalf ; other mss read died for our sins ; other mss read died for sins on your behalf; #Rm 6:10; Heb 9:28; 10:10; 1Pt 2:21; 4:1]

the righteous for the unrighteous,

that He might bring you to God,

after being put to death in the fleshly realm

but made alive in the spiritual realm.

19In that state He also went and made a proclamation to the spirits in prison[#Or In whom, or At that time, or In which; #1Jn 4:1; #Perhaps fallen supernatural beings or angels; 2Pt 2:4; Jd 6]

20who in the past were disobedient, when God patiently waited in the days of Noah while an ark was being prepared. In it a few — that is, eight people — were saved through water.[#Gn 5:29; #Lit souls; #Gn 5:32; 6:18; 7:7,13; 8:16,18]

21Baptism, which corresponds to this, now saves you (not the removal of the filth of the flesh, but the pledge of a good conscience toward God) through the resurrection of Jesus Christ.[#Heb 9:14; 10:22; #Or the appeal; #1Pt 1:3]

22Now that He has gone into heaven, He is at God’s right hand with angels, authorities, and powers subject to Him.[#Ac 1:10,12; 1Tm 3:16; Heb 4:14; 6:20; #Ps 110:1; Mk 16:19; Ac 2:33-34; Rm 8:34; Heb 10:12; #Eph 1:20-22]
