Psalms 1

BOOK I

(Psalms 1–41)

The Two Ways

1How happy is the man

who does not follow the advice of the wicked

or take the path of sinners

or join a group of mockers!

2Instead, his delight is in the Lord ’s instruction,

and he meditates on it day and night.

3He is like a tree planted beside streams of water[#Or beside irrigation canals]

that bears its fruit in season

and whose leaf does not wither.

Whatever he does prospers.

4The wicked are not like this;

instead, they are like chaff that the wind blows away.

5Therefore the wicked will not survive the judgment,[#Lit stand in; #Ps 5:5; 9:16; 76:7; Jr 25:31]

and sinners will not be in the community of the righteous.

6For the Lord watches over the way of the righteous,[#Jb 34:21; Ps 37:18; Nah 1:7; Jn 10:14; 2Tm 2:19]

but the way of the wicked leads to ruin.
