Revelation 16

The First Bowl

1Then I heard a loud voice from the sanctuary saying to the seven angels, “Go and pour out the seven bowls of God’s wrath on the earth.”[#Rv 8:2,6; 15:1,6-8; #Other mss omit seven; #Rv 17:1; 21:9]

2The first went and poured out his bowl on the earth, and severely painful sores broke out on the people who had the mark of the beast and who worshiped his image.[#Lit and a severely painful sore; #Ex 9:9-11; Dt 28:27,35; Jb 2:7; Is 1:6; Jr 30:12-17]

The Second Bowl

3The second poured out his bowl into the sea. It turned to blood like a dead man’s, and all life in the sea died.[#Other mss add angel; #Lit and every soul of life; #Rv 8:8-9]

The Third Bowl

4The third poured out his bowl into the rivers and the springs of water, and they became blood.[#Other mss add angel; #Ex 7:17-21]

5I heard the angel of the waters say:

You are righteous,

who is and who was, the Holy One,

for You have decided these things.

6Because they poured out

the blood of the saints and the prophets,

You also gave them blood to drink;

they deserve it!

7Then I heard someone from the altar say:

Yes, Lord God, the Almighty,

true and righteous are Your judgments.

The Fourth Bowl

8The fourth poured out his bowl on the sun. He was given the power to burn people with fire,[#Other mss add angel; #Or It; #Or authority]

9and people were burned by the intense heat. So they blasphemed the name of God, who had the power over these plagues, and they did not repent and give Him glory.[#Lv 24:11; Is 52:5; Rm 2:24; 1Tm 6:1; Rv 13:6; #Or authority; #Rv 9:20-21]

The Fifth Bowl

10The fifth poured out his bowl on the throne of the beast, and his kingdom was plunged into darkness. People gnawed their tongues because of their pain[#Other mss add angel; #Rv 2:13; 13:2; #Ex 10:21; #Lit They]

11and blasphemed the God of heaven because of their pains and their sores, yet they did not repent of their actions.[#Rv 13:6]

The Sixth Bowl

12The sixth poured out his bowl on the great river Euphrates, and its water was dried up to prepare the way for the kings from the east.[#Other mss add angel; #Gn 2:14; 15:18; Dt 11:24; 1Kg 4:21; Rv 9:14; #Ex 14:21-22,29; 15:19; Jos 2:10; 4:23; 5:1; 2Kg 2:8; Neh 9:11; Is 51:10]

13Then I saw three unclean spirits like frogs coming from the dragon’s mouth, from the beast’s mouth, and from the mouth of the false prophet.[#Ex 8:2-14; Lv 11:9-12,41-47; #Rv 12:9; #Rv 13:1; #Rv 13:11-17]

14For they are spirits of demons performing signs, who travel to the kings of the whole world to assemble them for the battle of the great day of God, the Almighty.[#2Th 2:9-10; #1Kg 22:20-23; Mt 24:24; 2Th 2:10; #Ezk 38-39; Jl 2:11; 3:2; Zch 14:2; Rv 19:11-21]

15“Look, I am coming like a thief. The one who is alert and remains clothed so that he may not go around naked and people see his shame is blessed.”[#Or and guards his clothes; #Lk 12:35-40; 1Th 5:2,6-8; #Rv 3:18; #Rv 1:3; 14:13; 19:9; 20:6; 22:7,14]

16So they assembled them at the place called in Hebrew, Armagedon.[#Other mss read Armageddon ; other mss read Harmegedon ; other mss read Mageddon ; other mss read Magedon; #Traditionally the hill of Megiddo, a great city that guarded the pass between the coast and the valley of Jezreel or Esdraelon; Jdg 5:19; 2Kg 9:27; #Jdg 5:19; 2Kg 9:27; Ezk 38:8]

The Seventh Bowl

17Then the seventh poured out his bowl into the air, and a loud voice came out of the sanctuary from the throne, saying, “It is done! ”[#Other mss add angel; #Or on the air; #Other mss add of heaven; #Is 66:6]

18There were flashes of lightning and rumblings of thunder. And a severe earthquake occurred like no other since man has been on the earth — so great was the quake.[#Ex 19:16-19; Rv 4:5; 8:5; 11:19]

19The great city split into three parts, and the cities of the nations fell. Babylon the Great was remembered in God’s presence; He gave her the cup filled with the wine of His fierce anger.[#Rv 18:10,16,18,19,21; #Or the Gentile cities; #Rv 14:19; 19:15]

20Every island fled, and the mountains disappeared.[#Lit mountains were not found; #Ezk 38:20; Rv 6:14]

21Enormous hailstones, each weighing about 100 pounds, fell from the sky on people, and they blasphemed God for the plague of hail because that plague was extremely severe.[#Lit about a talent ; talents varied in weight upwards from 75 pounds; #Rv 16:9,11; #Jos 10:11; Ezk 38:22]
