Isaiah 34

Judgment on the Nations

1Come near, nations, to hear;

Let the earth hear, and that which fills it;

2For the anger of Yahweh is against all the nations,

he has put them under a ban,

3And their slain shall be cast out;

And the mountains shall melt with their blood,

And the skies shall roll up like a scroll,

like the withering of a leaf from a vine,

5When my sword is drenched in the heavens,

look! It will descend upon Edom,

6Yahweh has a sword;[#Literally “A sword for Yahweh”]

it is full of blood.

with the blood of lambs and goats,

for Yahweh has a sacrifice in Bozrah

7And wild oxen shall go down with them,

And their land shall be drenched with blood,

8For Yahweh has a day of vengeance,[#Literally “a day of vengeance for Yahweh”]

9And its streams shall be changed to pitch and its soil to sulfur,

10Night and day it shall not be quenched;

From generation to generation it shall be in ruins;

11But the large bird and the hedgehog shall take possession of it,[#Or “And”]

And he shall stretch the measuring line of confusion out over it,

12Its nobles—but no kingdom is there—shall call,

13And thorns shall go up her citadel fortress,

and it shall be the settlement of jackals,

14And desert creatures shall meet with hyenas,

surely there Lilith shall repose,

15There the owl shall nest and lay

surely there the birds of prey shall be gathered,

16Seek from the book of Yahweh and read;[#Literally “call”]

none of these shall be missing;

For my mouth is the one that has commanded,

17And he is the one that has cast the lot for them,[#Literally “he”]

they shall take possession of it forever,
