Jeremiah 10

¹Hear the word that Yahweh speaks to you, O house of Israel.

²Thus says Yahweh:

“You must not learn the way of the nations,

³For the statutes of the peoples are vanity,

⁴He decorates it with silver and gold,

⁵They are like scarecrows in a cucumber field,[#Hebrew “scarecrow”]

Indeed, they must be carried,

You must not be afraid of them,

furthermore, to do good is not in them.”

⁶There is none like you, O Yahweh,

⁷Who would not revere you, O king of the nations?

For among all the wise men of the nations,

⁸At the same time they are stupid and foolish,[#Literally “And in one”]

⁹Silver beaten from Tarshish is brought,

the work of the craftsman and the hands of the goldsmith.

Blue and purple are their clothing,

¹⁰But Yahweh is the true God,

Because of his wrath the earth quakes,

¹¹“Thus you shall say to them,[#Literally “Like this”]

‘Gods who did not make the heavens and the earth

¹²He is the maker of the earth by his power,

¹³When he utters his voice there is a noise of water in the heavens,[#Literally “At the voice of his giving”]

He makes lightning for the rain,

¹⁴Everyone is stupid, without knowledge,[#Literally “All humankind”; #Literally “from knowledge”]

for his cast image is an illusion,

¹⁵They are vanity, a work of mockery,

¹⁶The portion of Jacob is not like these,

and Israel is the tribe of his inheritance,

¹⁷Gather your bundle from the ground,

¹⁸For thus says Yahweh,

“Look, I am about to sling out the inhabitants of the land at this time,

The Nation Accepts Its Judgment

¹⁹Woe to me, because of my wound.

But I said, “Surely this is my sickness,

²⁰My tent is devastated,

My children have gone out from me,

There is no one who pitches my tent again,

²¹For the shepherds have become stupid,

Therefore they do not have insight,

²²Listen, news:[#Or “a report”]

Look, it is coming,

to make the cities of Judah a desolation,

²³I know, O Yahweh, that to the human is not his own way,

²⁴Chastise me, O Yahweh, but in moderation,[#Or “Discipline”]

²⁵Pour out your wrath on the nations that do not know you,

for they have devoured Jacob,
