Sirach (Ecclesiasticus) 51

A Prayer of Jeshua Son of Sirach

1I give thanks to you, O Lord and King,

and I praise you, O God my Savior.

I give thanks to your name,

2for you have been my protector and helper.

You have rescued me from destruction,

from the traps set for me by slanderers,

by those who make up lies.

In the sight of my enemies

3you have been my helper and rescued me.

In keeping with your abundant kindness and great name,

you rescued me from gnashing teeth about to devour me,

from the hands of those wanting to kill me,

and from my many troubles.

4You rescued me from the choking flames that surrounded me,

from the fire that I had not kindled,

5from deep in the belly of Hades,

and from a filthy tongue and lying words,

for wicked people have slandered me before the king.

6My soul was approaching death;

my life was on the brink of the grave.

7My enemies surrounded me on every side,

and there was no one to help me.

I looked for someone to assist me,

but there was no one.

8Then I remembered your mercy, O Lord,

and your deeds from long ago.

You rescue those who wait for you

and save them from their enemies.

9I called out in prayer from the earth.

I pleaded to be rescued from death.

10I cried, “Lord, you are my Father.

Don’t abandon me in the times of trouble,

when there is no help against the proud.

11I will praise your name continually

and sing hymns of thanksgiving.”

My prayer was heard.

12You saved me from destruction

and rescued me in the time of trouble.

Therefore, I give you thanks and praise,

and I bless the name of the Lord.

The Author’s Search for Wisdom

13When I was still young, before I had traveled much,

I openly sought wisdom in my prayer.

14At the Temple I prayed to receive her,

and I will seek her to the end.

15My heart delighted in wisdom

from the time she first blossomed to the time she ripened into fruit.

My feet followed the right path.

I followed wisdom from the time I was young.

16I made some effort to listen and received wisdom.

I found a great deal of instruction.

17I have advanced in wisdom;

I give glory to the Lord, who gives me wisdom.

18For I have determined to live according to wisdom.

I was zealous for the good

and will never be disappointed.

19My soul has fought to possess wisdom,

and I tried to strictly control my conduct.

I spread out my hands to the heavens

and was grieved over my ignorance of her.

20I directed my soul toward wisdom,

and I found her as I lived purely.

Through wisdom I gained understanding right from the start;

therefore, I will not be forsaken.

21My heart was stirred to seek her;

therefore, I have gained a valuable prize.

22The Lord has rewarded me with things to say,

so I will praise him by speaking.

23Draw near to me, you unlearned,

and live in the house of instruction.

24Why do you complain of lacking these things,

and why do you let yourselves be so thirsty?

25I have declared,

“Buy wisdom for yourselves without money.”

26Submit your neck to wisdom’s yoke,

and let your soul receive instruction,

for it is easily found.

27See with your own eyes how I have not worked hard

and have found great peace in my life.

28Acquire instruction with a large sum of silver,

and you will use it to gain a great deal of gold.

29May your soul rejoice in the Lord’s mercy,

and may you never be ashamed to praise him.

30Do your work before the assigned time,

and the Lord will reward you in his time.
