Tobit 9

Tobit 9

Raphael Gets the Money from Gabael

1Then Tobiah said to Raphael,

2“Brother Azariah, take four household servants and two camels with you, and go to Rages. Go to Gabael, give him this portion of the written agreement, and get the money from him. Invite him to return with you to my wedding feast.

3You know that my father is counting the days until we return, and if I stay one day more than necessary, he will be very worried.

4You know that Raguel made an oath, obligating me to stay; I cannot violate his oath.”[#9:4 Some manuscripts place verse 4 before verse 3.]

5So Raphael took the four servants and two camels and went to Rages in Media, where he stayed overnight with Gabael. Raphael gave him Tobit’s portion of the written agreement. Then Raphael told Gabael that Tobit’s son, Tobiah, had married, and he invited Gabael to the wedding feast. So Gabael got up and counted out the money bags, each properly sealed, and loaded them on to camels.

6In the morning they both got up early and went to the wedding celebration. When they came to Raguel’s house, they found Tobiah sitting at the table. He stood up and greeted Gabael. Then Gabael began to weep, and he blessed Tobiah with these words: “You are the good and honorable son of a good and honorable man, who also is just and charitable. May the Lord grant the blessings of heaven to you and your wife and to your wife’s father and mother. Praise God, for I see that Tobiah looks a lot like my relative Tobit.”[#9:6 Greek reclining.]
