Timothy 1

Timothy 1

From Paul, an apostle of Christ Jesus, as commanded by God our Savior and Christ Jesus our hope.

To Timothy, my true son in the faith.

May God the Father and Christ Jesus our Lord give you grace, mercy, and peace.

Paul Warns Timothy to Oppose False Teachers

As I told you when I went into Macedonia, I want you to stay there in Ephesus. I need you to command certain people not to teach things that aren’t true and not to spend their time on made-up stories

and endless ancestry lists. These things only lead to fights about ideas. They don’t help God’s work move forward. Instead, that happens by faith.

I’m commanding you to do this for the sake of love, which comes from a pure heart, a clear conscience, and sincere faith.

Some people have turned away from these things and would rather talk about things that are pointless.

They want to be teachers of the law, but they don’t know what they are talking about, even though they think they do.

We know that the law is good if it’s used in the proper way.

It isn’t made for godly people, but for lawbreakers and rebels, for ungodly and sinful people, for those who aren’t holy and who don’t believe. The law is for those who kill their fathers or mothers, for murderers,

for those who commit sexual sins and homosexual acts. It’s for people who buy and sell slaves, who lie, and who give false witness in court. And it’s for anything else that goes against the true teaching

that agrees with the good news about the glory of the blessed God. He trusted me with that good news.

The Lord Pours Out His Grace on Paul

I thank Christ Jesus our Lord for giving me strength and for considering me faithful and appointing me to serve him.

I used to say insulting things about Jesus. I tried to hurt his followers, and I even used violence against them. But God had mercy on me because I did those things without knowing any better. I wasn’t a believer.

Our Lord poured out more and more of his grace on me, along with faith and love from Christ Jesus.

Here’s a saying you can trust and accept completely: Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners. And I’m the worst sinner of all,

but for that very reason, God showed me mercy. That way Christ Jesus could show how very patient he is. I, the worst of sinners, could become an example for everyone who would believe in him and receive eternal life.

May the eternal King, who will never die, who can’t be seen, and who is the only God, receive honor and glory for ever and ever. Amen.

Paul Commands Timothy

Timothy, my son, I’m giving you this command in keeping with the prophecies that were once made about you. By remembering them, you’ll be able to fight the battle well

and hold on to faith and a clear conscience. Some people have rejected these things, and now their faith is like a sinking ship.

Hymenaeus and Alexander are two of those people. I’ve handed them over to Satan so that they will learn not to say insulting things about God.
