The dragon stood on the seashore, and I saw a beast coming up out of the sea. It had ten horns and seven heads, and there were ten crowns on its horns. On each head there was a name that was disrespectful and insulting to God.
The beast I saw looked like a leopard, but it had feet like a bear and a mouth like a lion. The dragon gave the beast his power, his throne, and great authority.
One of the beast’s heads seemed to have had a deadly wound, but the wound had been healed. The whole world was amazed and followed the beast.
People worshiped the dragon because he had given authority to the beast, and they also worshiped the beast. They asked, “Who is like the beast? Who can fight it?”
The beast was given a mouth so it could brag about itself and say insulting things about God. The beast was allowed to use its authority for 42 months.
The beast opened its mouth and insulted God, and it insulted his name and the place where he lives and those who live in heaven with him.
The beast was allowed to fight a war against the saints and defeat them. It was given authority over every tribe, race, language, and nation.
Everyone who lives on the earth will worship the beast if their name hasn’t been written in the book of life that belongs to the Lamb, who was willing to be a sacrifice from the time the world began.
Whoever has ears should listen.
“Everyone who’s supposed to be captured
will be captured,
and everyone who’s supposed to be killed by a sword
will be killed by a sword.”
So God’s people must be patient and faithful.
Then I saw a second beast. This one came out of the earth. It had two horns like a lamb, but it spoke like a dragon.
This beast had all the authority of the first beast, and it carried out its wishes. It made the earth and everyone who lives on it worship the first beast. The first beast was the one whose deadly wound had been healed.
The second beast performed great signs. It even made fire come from heaven to earth as everyone was watching.
The first beast had given the second beast the power to perform these signs, and by these signs, the second beast tricked those who live on the earth. The second beast ordered people to set up a statue to honor the first beast. The first beast was the one who’d been wounded by a sword but had survived.
The second beast was allowed to breathe life into this statue so that it could speak and kill anyone who refused to worship it.
The statue also forced everyone—great or small, rich or poor, free or slave—to receive a mark on their right hand or on their forehead.
No one could buy or sell anything unless they had the mark, which was the name of the beast or the number of its name.
This will require wisdom and careful thought: Anyone who can solve puzzles should figure out what the beast’s number means. It’s the number of a man, and that number is 666.
