Deuteronomy 25

Deuteronomy 25

Judging Disputes

If there is a controversy between men, they are to court for judgment. The judges will judge them, and they will exonerate the righteous and condemn the wicked.

If the wicked man is worthy to be beaten, the judge will cause him to lie down and to be beaten before his face, according to his wickedness, by number.

He may sentence him to forty stripes, but no more. If he is beaten more than that many stripes, then your brother will be degraded in your sight.

You must not muzzle the ox when he treads out the grain.

Levirate Marriage

If brothers live together, and one of them dies without a son, the wife of the dead must not be married outside to a stranger. Her husband’s brother is to go in to her and take her as his wife, and perform the duty of a husband’s brother to her.

The firstborn whom she bears will bear the name of his dead brother, so that his name not be blotted out of Israel.

If the man doesn’t want to take his brother’s wife, then his brother’s wife is to go up to the gate to the elders, and say, “My husband’s brother refuses to carry on his brother’s name in Israel. He will not perform the duty of a husband’s brother to me.”

Then the elders of his city are to call him, and speak to him. If he stands and says, “I don’t want to take her,”

then his brother’s wife is to come to him in the presence of the elders, and remove his sandal from off his foot, and spit in his face. She will answer and say, “This is to be done to the man who does not build up his brother’s house.”

In Israel, his family name will be called, “The house of the one whose sandal was removed.”

When two men are fighting against each other, and the wife of one comes to rescue her husband from the hand of the one who is striking him, and reaches out her hand and grabs his genitals,

then you are to cut off her hand. Your eye must have no pity.

You must not have differing stone weights in your bag, one heavy and one light.

You must not have differing dry measures in your house, one large and one small.

You must have a accurate and just stone weights. You must have a accurate and just dry measures, so that your days may be long in the land which YHWH your God gives you.

For everyone who do such things and acts unjustly, are an abomination to YHWH your God.

Remember what the Amalekites did to you along the way as y’all came out of Egypt,

how they met you on the way when you were faint and weary, and attacked your stragglers who had fallen behind. They did not fear God.

Therefore when YHWH your God has given you rest from all your enemies all around in the land that YHWH your God is giving you for an inheritance to possess it, that you are to blot out the memory of Amalek from under the sky. You must not forget.
