2 Timothy 1

Greeting

1Paul, an apostle of Christ Jesus by the will of God according to the promise of the life that is in Christ Jesus,[#2 Cor. 1:1; #1 Cor. 1:1; #Titus 1:2; Heb. 9:15]

2To Timothy, my beloved child:[#1 Cor. 4:17; 2:1]

Grace, mercy, and peace from God the Father and Christ Jesus our Lord.

Guard the Deposit Entrusted to You

3I thank God whom I serve, as did my ancestors, with a clear conscience, as I remember you constantly in my prayers night and day.[#Rom. 1:8; #Acts 22:3; 24:14; #1 Tim. 3:9; Acts 23:1; #Rom. 1:9]

4As I remember your tears, I long to see you, that I may be filled with joy.[#Acts 20:37; #Phil. 1:8; 4:9, 21]

5I am reminded of your sincere faith, a faith that dwelt first in your grandmother Lois and your mother Eunice and now, I am sure, dwells in you as well.[#Rom. 12:9; 1 Tim. 1:5; #Acts 16:1; 3:15; Ps. 86:16; 116:16]

6For this reason I remind you to fan into flame the gift of God, which is in you through the laying on of my hands,[#1 Tim. 4:14; 1 Thess. 5:19]

7for God gave us a spirit not of fear but of power and love and self-control.[#Rom. 8:15; John 14:27; Rev. 21:8; #Luke 24:49; Acts 1:8]

8Therefore do not be ashamed of the testimony about our Lord, nor of me his prisoner, but share in suffering for the gospel by the power of God,[#Mark 8:38; #1 Cor. 1:6; #Eph. 3:1; #2:3, 9; 4:5]

9who saved us and called us to a holy calling, not because of our works but because of his own purpose and grace, which he gave us in Christ Jesus before the ages began,[#1 Tim. 1:1; Titus 3:4; #Heb. 3:1; #1:9 Or with; #Titus 3:5; Rom. 3:27; #Heb. 3:1; #Titus 1:2; Rom. 16:25; #1:9 Greek]

10and which now has been manifested through the appearing of our Savior Christ Jesus, who abolished death and brought life and immortality to light through the gospel,[#Rom. 16:26; #2 Thess. 2:8; #1 Cor. 15:26; 1 Cor. 15:54, 55; Heb. 2:14, 15; #Job 33:30; #Rom. 2:7]

11for which I was appointed a preacher and apostle and teacher,[#1 Tim. 2:7]

12which is why I suffer as I do. But I am not ashamed, for I know whom I have believed, and I am convinced that he is able to guard until that day what has been entrusted to me.[#2:9; #8; #Ps. 10:14; 1 Pet. 4:19; #18; 4:8; 1 Cor. 3:13; #1 Tim. 6:20; #1:12 Or what I have entrusted to him ; Greek]

13Follow the pattern of the sound words that you have heard from me, in the faith and love that are in Christ Jesus.[#3:14; Titus 1:9; Rev. 3:3; #Rom. 2:20; 6:17; #1 Tim. 1:10; #1:13 Or healthy; #2:2; #1 Tim. 1:14]

14By the Holy Spirit who dwells within us, guard the good deposit entrusted to you.[#Rom. 8:9; #12]

15You are aware that all who are in Asia turned away from me, among whom are Phygelus and Hermogenes.[#Acts 19:10; 4:10, 11, 16]

16May the Lord grant mercy to the household of Onesiphorus, for he often refreshed me and was not ashamed of my chains,[#4:19; #Philem. 7, 20; #Acts 28:20]

17but when he arrived in Rome he searched for me earnestly and found me—[#Matt. 25:36-40]

18may the Lord grant him to find mercy from the Lord on that day!—and you well know all the service he rendered at Ephesus.[#12; #Heb. 6:10]
