Psalm 107

Book Five

Let the Redeemed of the Lord Say So

1Oh give thanks to the Lord , for he is good,[#Ps. 105:1; #Ps. 100:5]

for his steadfast love endures forever!

2Let the redeemed of the Lord say so,[#Ps. 106:10]

whom he has redeemed from trouble

3and gathered in from the lands,[#Ps. 106:47; Deut. 30:3; Isa. 11:12; 43:5; 56:8; Jer. 29:14; 31:8, 10; Ezek. 20:34, 41; 39:27]

from the east and from the west,

from the north and from the south.

4Some wandered in desert wastes,[#40; Deut. 32:10]

finding no way to a city to dwell in;

5hungry and thirsty,

their soul fainted within them.

6Then they cried to the Lord in their trouble,[#13, 19, 28; Ps. 106:44]

and he delivered them from their distress.

7He led them by a straight way[#Ezra 8:21]

till they reached a city to dwell in.

8Let them thank the Lord for his steadfast love,[#15, 21, 31]

for his wondrous works to the children of man!

9For he satisfies the longing soul,[#Ps. 34:10; 146:7]

and the hungry soul he fills with good things.

10Some sat in darkness and in the shadow of death,[#Luke 1:79; Isa. 42:7; 49:9; Mic. 7:8; #14; Job 10:21]

prisoners in affliction and in irons,

11for they had rebelled against the words of God,[#Ps. 106:7, 33, 43; Ps. 78:40]

and spurned the counsel of the Most High.

12So he bowed their hearts down with hard labor;

they fell down, with none to help.

13Then they cried to the Lord in their trouble,[#6, 19, 28]

and he delivered them from their distress.

14He brought them out of darkness and the shadow of death,[#10]

and burst their bonds apart.

15Let them thank the Lord for his steadfast love,[#8, 21, 31]

for his wondrous works to the children of man!

16For he shatters the doors of bronze[#Isa. 45:2]

and cuts in two the bars of iron.

17Some were fools through their sinful ways,[#Prov. 1:7; 14:9]

and because of their iniquities suffered affliction;

18they loathed any kind of food,[#Job 33:20]

and they drew near to the gates of death.

19Then they cried to the Lord in their trouble,[#6, 13, 28]

and he delivered them from their distress.

20He sent out his word and healed them,[#Ps. 147:15, 18; Matt. 8:8; #Ps. 30:2, 3; 2 Kgs. 20:5; Job 33:29, 30]

and delivered them from their destruction.

21Let them thank the Lord for his steadfast love,[#8, 15, 31]

for his wondrous works to the children of man!

22And let them offer sacrifices of thanksgiving,[#Ps. 50:14]

and tell of his deeds in songs of joy!

23Some went down to the sea in ships,[#Isa. 42:10]

doing business on the great waters;

24they saw the deeds of the Lord ,

his wondrous works in the deep.

25For he commanded and raised the stormy wind,[#Ps. 105:31, 34; #Ps. 148:8; Jonah 1:4]

which lifted up the waves of the sea.

26They mounted up to heaven; they went down to the depths;

their courage melted away in their evil plight;

27they reeled and staggered like drunken men[#Isa. 24:20; 29:9; Job 12:25]

and were at their wits’ end.

28Then they cried to the Lord in their trouble,[#6, 13, 19]

and he delivered them from their distress.

29He made the storm be still,[#Ps. 65:7]

and the waves of the sea were hushed.

30Then they were glad that the waters were quiet,[#107:30 Hebrew]

and he brought them to their desired haven.

31Let them thank the Lord for his steadfast love,[#8, 15, 21]

for his wondrous works to the children of man!

32Let them extol him in the congregation of the people,[#Ps. 99:5; #Ps. 22:22, 25]

and praise him in the assembly of the elders.

33He turns rivers into a desert,[#Isa. 50:2; Isa. 42:15]

springs of water into thirsty ground,

34a fruitful land into a salty waste,[#Gen. 13:10; 14:3; Deut. 29:23]

because of the evil of its inhabitants.

35He turns a desert into pools of water,[#Ps. 114:8; Isa. 41:18; Isa. 35:6, 7; 43:19, 20]

a parched land into springs of water.

36And there he lets the hungry dwell,

and they establish a city to live in;

37they sow fields and plant vineyards

and get a fruitful yield.

38By his blessing they multiply greatly,[#Gen. 12:2; 17:20; Ex. 1:7]

and he does not let their livestock diminish.

39When they are diminished and brought low

through oppression, evil, and sorrow,

40he pours contempt on princes[#Job 12:21]

and makes them wander in trackless wastes;

41but he raises up the needy out of affliction[#Ps. 113:7, 8; 1 Sam. 2:8]

and makes their families like flocks.

42The upright see it and are glad,[#Job 22:19]

and all wickedness shuts its mouth.

43Whoever is wise, let him attend to these things;[#Ps. 64:9; Jer. 9:12; Hos. 14:9]

let them consider the steadfast love of the Lord .
