Titus 1

Greeting

Paul, a servant of God and an apostle of Jesus Christ, for the sake of the faith of God’s elect and their knowledge of the truth, which accords with godliness,[#1:1 For the contextual rendering of the Greek word , see Preface; #2 Cor. 1:1; #1 Tim. 2:4; #1 Tim. 6:3]

in hope of eternal life, which God, who never lies, promised before the ages began[#2 Tim. 1:1; Heb. 9:15; 2:13; 3:7; #Num. 23:19; 2 Tim. 2:13; Heb. 6:18; #Rom. 1:2; #2 Tim. 1:9; #1:2 Greek]

and at the proper time manifested in his word through the preaching with which I have been entrusted by the command of God our Savior;[#1 Tim. 2:6; #1:3 Or manifested his word; #Rom. 10:14; #1 Tim. 1:11; #1 Tim. 1:1]

To Titus, my true child in a common faith:[#3 John 4; #Jude 3; 2 Pet. 1:1]

Grace and peace from God the Father and Christ Jesus our Savior.

Qualifications for Elders

This is why I left you in Crete, so that you might put what remained into order, and appoint elders in every town as I directed you—[#1 Tim. 1:3; #Acts 14:23; 2 Tim. 2:2]

if anyone is above reproach, the husband of one wife, and his children are believers and not open to the charge of debauchery or insubordination.[#1 Tim. 3:2-4; #1:6 Or a man of one woman; #1:6 Or are faithful; #Eph. 5:18]

For an overseer, as God’s steward, must be above reproach. He must not be arrogant or quick-tempered or a drunkard or violent or greedy for gain,[#1:7 Or bishop ; Greek; #Luke 12:42; 1 Cor. 4:1; 1 Pet. 4:10; #2 Pet. 2:10; #1 Tim. 3:8; 1 Pet. 5:2]

but hospitable, a lover of good, self-controlled, upright, holy, and disciplined.[#1 Cor. 9:25]

He must hold firm to the trustworthy word as taught, so that he may be able to give instruction in sound doctrine and also to rebuke those who contradict it.[#2 Thess. 2:13, 15; #1 Tim. 1:10; #1:9 Or healthy ; also verse 13]

For there are many who are insubordinate, empty talkers and deceivers, especially those of the circumcision party.[#1 Tim. 1:6; #Acts 11:2; #1:10 Or especially those of the circumcision]

They must be silenced, since they are upsetting whole families by teaching for shameful gain what they ought not to teach.[#2 Tim. 3:6; #1 Tim. 6:5; 2 Pet. 2:3]

One of the Cretans, a prophet of their own, said, “Cretans are always liars, evil beasts, lazy gluttons.”[#Acts 17:28; #1:12 Greek; #1:12 Probably from Epimenides of Crete]

This testimony is true. Therefore rebuke them sharply, that they may be sound in the faith,[#2:15; 1 Tim. 5:20; #2 Cor. 13:10; #2:1, 2]

not devoting themselves to Jewish myths and the commands of people who turn away from the truth.[#1 Tim. 1:4; #Col. 2:22; #1 Tim. 6:20]

To the pure, all things are pure, but to the defiled and unbelieving, nothing is pure; but both their minds and their consciences are defiled.[#Luke 11:41; 1 Tim. 4:3; #Rom. 14:23; #1 Tim. 6:5]

They profess to know God, but they deny him by their works. They are detestable, disobedient, unfit for any good work.[#1 John 2:4; #1 Tim. 5:8; #2 Tim. 3:8]
